To help with the driving down to the Alps, I plan to add my mate onto my car insurance. Anyone done this as a separate policy and if so, who would you recommend? My insurer wont add temp cover for driving abroad, so as a named driver only (and that was £285!!). I'm only after 5 days cover, so dont want to spend too much. TIA

Not used them myself (insurer has been fine about putting named drivers on for short periods before) but...

Thanks, but tried them. £100. I'm not willing to pay that. Maybe there is someone cheaper

The admin involved means it's always going to be disproportionately expensive I'm afraid - I've tried the same in the past for various things - even adding my Mum - 60 years old, 30+ years no claims etc and it's been £100 or so.

Who's your insurer or are you and your friend particularly young, bad driving record or in a powerful car. Done what you're trying to do loads of times and never paid more than £40. Is it worth cancelling your policy and finding a more reasonable insurer. Direct Line always been reasonable for me.

The guy is 34, no claims or convictions, driving an 05 Honda Accord Tourer.
I'm with Swinton, who I have only just signed up with. When I went into their branch to present my NCB, they ran through a sample quote of £50 to add him on, but as my insurance wasnt due to start until a few days later, I couldnt proceed with it... Now it appears to have all changed 🙄 I'm thinking that maybe I didnt say that it was for driving abroad, I'm not sure. I cant be bothered to go through the cancellation

Is your car valuable? We just drive each others using 3rd party cover and try not to crash. Nobody in our gang owns anything valuable, though. Also you need to check if his policy covers 3rd party on other vehicles as more don't these days.

£100 for temp insurance sounds about right for use abroad, we use dayinsure and that's about £150 ish.

As nickjb has said, maybe if they have driving other cars on their own insurance you could use that.

I take it the £285 is for the year. Can you add them permanently and then remove them after the required period? Should work out much cheaper.

Don't use the cover for driving other people's cars off your mates own insurance. If he has it it will be uk only so no use abroad.

If it is valid UK insurance then it is valid anywhere in the EU. Just don't go via Switzerland. Although worth checking with your/his insurer rather than some random bloke on the internet
