Hi all,

So I started having driving lessons 3 weeks ago, and have now done 6 hours.

Naturally I decided to see, once I pass my test, how much insurance would be. As I am a 17 year old male, I didn't expect it to be cheap. Therefore I decided to get a quote for a 1.2 Volkswagen Fox (Group 1) just to get a taster of prices. I ticked the Pass Plus box and said that the car would be kept in a locked garage overnight. Then I clicked retrieve quote...

£4363 was the cheapest 😯 😯 😯 Crikey! Now I know some 17 year olds can idiots. But that is a heck of a lot of money. I could buy a pretty awesome bike for that!

You'll be paying around 1K. Where did you look? It's always going to hurt at first, but it comes down fast. And bear in mind that a group1 car may not be the cheapest, it depends on the car not the group, and a fox is fairly new and valuable still hence the price I think. Most learners make do on a £500 rot box until they've accrued a few miles and dents, it's the sensible option!

I've looked on various insurance websites like comparethemarket.com

As above some cars are much cheaper to insure, its not just the group. Avoid anything that could be 'boy racered'.
