We are looking to get our tarmac and grass driveway/front garden completely overhauled and was looking for ideas on rough costs.
The area is 132m2 and is currently a tarmac drive and two lawns either side.
It's all lumpy and breaking up so needs sorting.
Which type of driveway offers best value for money and longevity ??
Cheers.
Im sure there’s a couple of local blokes with an anonymous white van and no landline number could do it cheap...
We’re looking at drives. Currently got a rectangular patch just wide enough for two cars but not much space between so you're getting out of the car and stepping onto the lawn. Not got any quotes yet, but if you want a drive that is wide enough for two cars with some space to open doors and walk down the side without walking on the lawn then some sort of block kind of drive you’re looking at around 10k for a proper job based upon a neighbours job. Tarmac is cheaper and another neighbour has got some coloured tarmac edged with blocks, which sounds crap, but actually looks nice, but don’t know them so not sure how much it was.
we paid £65/m2, prepped, supplied and fitted for Marshal Tegula Grey or a look-a-likey 2 years ago.

That sounds pretty expensive.
We got Cambridgeshire Driveways to quote us when we first moved in, to block pave our drive and turn a small triangular planted bed into a turfed area. They are a well known company in the area with a good reputation and wanted £4.5k I think.
That's for an area next to the house long enough for two cars up to the garage with plenty of room either side, plus the area in front of the house that you can also get 2 cars on with the area we wanted turfing to the front of that.
We've seen their work, so know they put down plenty of sub-base depth as well as the right drainage channels in front of garages etc.
A concrete driveway works out good value for money I think, but doesn't look great.
A year ago we paid £8k for a tarmac driveway long enough for 4 cars, a concrete base for a garage (built up about 1ft) and a patio area including fencing and a gate.
Be careful. Use the wrong material (non pourous) and you need planning permission, and believe me it’s a issue if you come to sell.
Normal way round it is to put block paving around tarmac.
