So I'm no longer a massive drinker

Beer make me want to pee lots, gives me a stinking hangover and a banging headache, plus I get bored trying to drink a pint of it!

I used to mainly drink Vodka (neat, mixers, vodka based alcopops etc..) but these days that also gives me a bad hangover and I don't enjoy vodka much

Not a Whiskey fan

I've found that I actually like the taste of Southern Comfort, I don't get bad hangovers, no banging headaches and I don't waste the following day recovering

What other drinks are there like Southern Comfort? Are there lots of different types/brands like there is for Whiskey and Vodka?

+1

I discovered Kraken rum the other year and it's become my Xmas day tipple of choice. The rum to take the edge off my parents and the coke caffeine to keep me awake just until the dishes need cleaning.

Varnish.

It's a bit rough going down, but it's got a lovely smooth finish.

Southern Comforts original recipe (invented by a bar tender) is "An inch of vanilla bean, about a quarter of a lemon, half of a cinnamon stick, four cloves, a few cherries, and an orange bit or two. He would let this soak for days. And right when he was ready to finish, he would add his sweetener: he liked to use honey." and was originally made with Bourbon although commercially its just made with 'spirit' now. So you could make your own if you want something thats like Southern Comfort but isn't

So its a flavoured whisky effectively (but not actually whisky any more) not a brand of whisky. The taste is from the added flavourings rather than a distilling /maturing / blending process -  In fact if its not actually whisky anymore the chances are the cloves, orange etc aren't actually in there anymore either 🙂

I found the sweetness of it too overpowering.

If you like it though and want to try something different  you might like Mead.

I'd have thought a spiced rum might be up your street, possibly just needing the right mixer (according to your preference).

Or Malibu?

I was given some last year along with some ginger beer and mixed together its a great way to convince yourself you're not drinking booze

On a recent holiday in Menorca the hotel bar when I asked for Southern Comfort and Lemonade would pour Jack Daniels instead?

What other drinks are there like Southern Comfort? Are there lots of different types/brands like there is for Whiskey and Vodka?

Its a whiskey based liquer so in terms of broad category there are quite a lot and for in the UK the big brands (so the ones you are most likely to find in a pub to try) you'd have Glayva and Drambuie.  There are some Jack Daniels liquers as well - which might be closer in taste to Southern Comfort (its so long since I tried it - and it was drowned in lemonade I'm not sure I know what SC actually tastes like).  Do you drink it neat or with a mixer?

If you want to experiment then there's loads of flavoured gin liquers which might hit the mark - but they vary widely so don't be put off if you don't like the first one.  Rum seems to be the latest trend for distilleries to be banging out now - if there's not already an option you like - seem you need to be going down the cocktail route!

As a left field suggestion - which will be noting like SC - how about Disarano?  Its a bit of an acquired taste but drunk neat (over ice) its a sipping drink rather than knocked back which I suspect is how you avoid the hangover.

There is a Jack Daniels Honey Tennessee Whiskey, which I suspect was what they were pouring. I was given a bottle one Christmas. Not a fan.

Drambuie?

A rusty nail (2 parts whisky, 1 part drambuie) is/was my hip flask tipple of choice on a christmas day bike ride. It's too sickly to drink enough to do much harm but very warming.

Drambuie is pretty similar, as @convert says. I've also found that dark rum is pretty good.

Personally, I've got into dark, Spanish Vermouths. Sip over ice, dark and spicy, but not as strong as a spirit, so you can have a few over an evening without much harm. Yzaguirre Rojo Reserva is my current favourite.

Sloe gin and tonic has the same characteristics you seek - not overly sweet, fruity.

I find Jack Daniels a bit harsh - not at all like Southern Comfort.

You could try Jim Beam Honey - that’s a flavoured bourbon and is fairly smooth. I’ve had a bottle in the cupboard for ages and occasionally have one.

I used to drink southern comfort as a youth and was quite partial to a standard bourbon until relatively recently when I started drinking spiced rum more.

The bourbons I liked the most were Bullet Bourbon and Buffalo Trace - at the sweeter end of bourbons.

Something like Dead Man’s Fingers original spiced rum is quite drinkable without costing the earth if you fancy trying a rum.

I used to drink southern comfort with archers. Glayva is nice, the only short I drink now. Southern Comfort 100% is lovely from memory

The Jack Daniels Honey is not quite as sweet as Southern Comfort but along the same lines. I like them both but prefer SC or just straight JD. Keep in freezer as it adds a nice thick mouth feel to the drink. Could also try Ameretto, not same flavour but similar thick mouth feel after freezer time.

Ia'm with binners on this except some spiced rum is okay.

Pimm's winter would fit the southern comfort that's whisky based I think.

If you like the orangyness(?) of SC you might enjoy Cointreau, although it's a bit more of a liqueur than a whisky.

I never used to like Scotch whisky but really liked Irish whiskeys so perhaps they may be worth a try too. Something like Jameson's is different as it's not smokey like a lot of Scotch due to the use of anthracite rather than peat in the production and to me alway seemed more subtle for it.

Other than port my Xmas tipple is Dissarano, not too sweet and a little warmth. But then I bloody love marzipan in dark chocolate. I’m having one now in sherry glass.

Dead Man's Fingers do a bunch of flavoured rums. if it's the sweetens of SC you like then they might tick the box.

Maybe try a Captain Morgan’s Spiced Rum. Way back when I drank Southern Comfort and lemonade I used to like a Morgan’s spiced with cola. Haven’t had either for about 30yrs.

Guess you guys are not Southern Comfort fans

I started my alcohol journey drinking Bells and Teachers, then Southern Comfort. Then when I’d grown up a bit I started drinking Laphroig. That was in the 1970’s, mind. No, I’m not a fan, it’s far too sweet and sickly. I’ve picked up a bottle each of Lidl’s Islay single malt and Kentucky bourbon today, and I’m waiting for a bottle of Adnam’s Rye Whiskey to arrive. I’m going to get a bottle of Penderyn and a bottle of Irish, open to a suggestion there, as I’m not so familiar with Irish whiskey. Be nice to have an example from each part of the British Isles, England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales; never done that before.

To go back to the main subject, someone mentioned mead, which strikes me as a good option, it’s a traditional drink, it’s alcoholic, and being honey-based, fairly sweet, with the option of experimenting with additional flavours and spices to give a bit more interest. Lemon juice, clove sticks, the sort of things used in mulled wine or cider.

Actually, mulled cider might be worth a go; I’ve never been interested in cider, despite being from the West Country, it’s more Somerset and Hereford than Wiltshire, but there was a Cider Bus at End Of The Road Festival, and as it was getting a bit chilly in the evenings someone suggested giving it a try. Have to say, a pint of that, hot and straight from the tap, finished the evening off very nicely indeed.

Just having a shufti at Master Of Malt’s site, who I’m getting the Adnams from, and they’ve got this:

https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/teeling/teeling-ginger-beer-cask-finish-whiskey/

Not cheap, but from the description it looks like it might be just the thing. I’m very tempted myself to be perfectly honest, I was given a glass of ginger wine at a friends a couple of days ago, which was nicely warming, and that might also be worth giving a try, not too sweet, with the added warmth to it.

I drank Southern comfort when younger. But when you have a raging hangover, dehydrated and taking that first pee in the morning it smells the same going out as when it went in.

I tried drinking Disaronno instead, and Aldi used to do cheap, acceptable ones, but too sweet and icky in the end.

You used to be able to get a nice, smooth absinthe on Amazon: (Mr. Jekyll) https://amzn.eu/d/bIXxLPv but not sure where you can get it now. I'm still holding onto a bottle for a very special occasion. I highly recommend this brand drunk neat.

Ginger wine? If you like your sweet with a fiery finish.

Try with a splash of whisky and scoop of vanilla ice cream for a quality float.

Jim Beam black cherry. Fair warning though, it’s lethal. Tastes like pop but is strong. Have you tried standard bourbon like Makers Mark or Woodford? Something like Sailor Jerry rum might appeal too.

For those advocating Disaronno, give your tastebuds a treat and move up to Saliza.

so continuing the excellent drinks of yesteryear/back of someone's parents' drinks cabinet stuff theme, what about a whisky mac? Whisky and green ginger. Proper old biddy drink any remaining man's pub should be able to concoct. I have ordered these just to watch lips curl.

I do actually like an amoreto now and again, more with a hot drink though to round off alcoholic consumption.

Or turps. Obviously turps.

JD Honey is beyond vile, it's vile neat and nothing I have tried mixing it with has improved the taste. I haven't had Southern Comfort for years, I think the last time I was around 17 and someone got so pissed they clobbered me over the head with the bottle. OP I think you should try Buffalo Trace bourbon, it's very good considering it's fairly cheap.

For those advocating Disaronno, give your tastebuds a treat and move up to Saliza.

Noted. I have been enjoying the odd Disaronno and cranberry juice, it's basically a cherry bakewell in a glass.

"Red Stag." It's revolting.

Have you tried standard bourbon like Makers Mark or Woodford?

Makers is one of my favourite bourbons. Semi-often on sale in supermarkets for around £25.

Southern Comfort is basically a commercially made Old Fashioned - the original cocktail.

Make your own - decent bourbon, a sweetener (syrup/honey/sugar) and bitters (Angostura the standard along with the orange variety but you can buy others to add different flavours

https://www.liquor.com/recipes/bourbon-old-fashioned/

Seconded on the recommendation for Buffalo Trace Bourbon. I like Woodford Reserve as well and you can often pick that up at a reasonable price

Cheers for all the replies, there are some drinks there that if i see in the pub next time ill give them a go

In my 20's the quickest way to get drunk for me was the following

Gold label & Stella split, 2-3 pints of that and i was wasted

Other favourite was to order 2 neat double vodka's and bottle of Smirnoff ice black, drink just the neck out of the Smirnoff ice black and then pour in one neat double vodka, then neck the other neat double vodka then down the Smirnoff ice black!

I’ve just sampled  a bottle of homemade bramble whisky I was given for Christmas that’s giving me a little bit of a southern comfort recall - sweet and almost chewy. A bit like drinking undiluted cordial- although it needing to a mature a bit yet

Sat down to watch a bit of TV half an hour ago and splosshed some Bells and Stones Ginger Wine into a glass.
Getting up for the 9:45 ride tomorrow might be a bit of a challenge but if I take the ebike I won't have to drive so all is good.
