Just wondered what effect a tot of whiskey would have on one's ability to ride red/black graded trails? My mates have started taking hip flasks and I am accused of being a namby-pamby/miserable git because I like to stay stone cold sober while riding the trails.

Anecdotal tales of riding while under the influence would be greatly appreciated 🙂

oh, this thread is going to get soooo self-righteous in less time than it takes to drink a pint. Im off to the pub to wait at the front door. They open at 12.

The only time I've ever ridden offroad under the influence (of some substance or other), I had my worst OTB ever and ripped a load of tendons in my shoulder. Laid on the floor screaming pain too, which isn't something I would normally do after a crash! Weird. Never again thanks very much.

I did a nice wednesday night off road bar crawl one christmas. had a fairly nasty crash after the 2nd pint.

however...... it was a front snakebite (and tyre rolling off the rim) on a fast corner so there is no way id have saved it anyway!

Riding under the influence of alcohol is for me a hideous feeling, if it floats others boats that's fine.

If you can't give booze to a baby, someone has to drink it.

A mate of my dads (years ago) once got smashed in his local, and decided to ride home. Woke up in hospital without a clue how he got there. Turns out he fell off and into a ditch, passed out cold. Someone found him in the morning, called the ambulance who got him to hospital and turns out he'd broken his neck.

If he hadn't passed out, and tried to move he'd probably have been paralysed.

Drinking on the trails if for your own safety! 😛

We've been known not to make it out of the pub on night-rides. Or maybe make it to 'the next' pub, if we're feeling adventurous. One legendary bonfire night-ride involved absinthe and got very very messy indeed

I suppose your attitude to drinking when riding depends on how much of a lightweight fanny you are 😉

Where to start... 😉

Couple of nips out the old hip flask never did anyone any harm. I can thoroughly recommend a Whisky Mac at this time of year (whisky and crabbies)

Had a cracking snowy ride last winter with a couple of nips from the hip flask half way round. Just a couple of sips to warm the old cockles.

We often get pretty drunk and carry on riding or at least ride home offroad after the pub chucks us out. Its ended very badly sometimes, but most of the time its just a good laugh. Its definitely not clever though.

Nope when competitive (I mean normal training/having fun) riding (mtb or road) only post ride tipple if it's "shall we go to the pub on the way home?"
Do ride the foldie to my local on occasion though..

I don't like drinking and then riding, I can feel my reactions slow down - so I used to spurn the hipflask at the top of hills.

But actually a little nip seems to make it much easier to get into riding back down a freezing cold/wet/snowy mountain.

I'd seriously recommend riding back from the boozer after a serious night on the sauce with WCA though. That was never going to end well 😳

on two occasions on the way home from my local i've had 'offs'. one broken collar bone after falling off the side of the cycle path. the second one i wanted to make sure i didn't fall off that side again, so i made for the canal side, which resulted in me hauling the bike ( still attached to my shoes ) out, before pulling myself out of the drink. no broken bones this time, just a written off smart phone, so the trend indicates that if there is a next time, i'll do no damage at all, or at least only of a small monetary value...

I'd only really consider a few drinks out on a ride if I could have the car to drive home in afterwards.

My wife hasnt yet spoken to me after I rode home Sunday evening from the cricket club. She has shouted at me, blanked me etc... to be fair, 2.30 til 8.30 on Pedigree was perhaps a bit daft.. 😯

I used to get stoned out of my little tree on the way to riding every week. I'd then have another one pre rolled for the descents.

Last bivvy ride I did involved a 25 mile xc ride to a pub, we didn't want to get there too early, arrived at about 10pm, pub kicked us out at about 1am, we'd had a fair bit by then.

The bivvy spot was only about 5 miles away, we ended up there at about 3am, not quite sure why it took us so long.

Woke up at 7 with the dew on my face and feeling great!
