Hey,
I'm drilling a hole for a CAT6 cable through an external wall, to extend the internet from our garage to the house.
What is best to fill the hole with afterwards?
Cheers!
Ricks
EDIT: Ninja edit done.
Cable obviously.
Then window frame sealant.
Also you'll not manage to drill a cat 6 through a wall, it's way too flexible to penetrate brick and, even if it's only plaster board you'll end up with a hole the size of your hand once you've spun it up in a decent drill. Use a masonry bit instead.
Chuck up a Cryogenically frozen diamond sausage 50 amp hour impact driver and a dab of clear silicone sealant so it is transparent and assumes the brick colour.
Ha ha ha.
Good form this evening!
Cool beans. Silicon Sealant it is. That was my initial thoughts, but then started thinking about things like caulk and Polyfiller.
Silicon sealant is what BT used when they fitted a new broadband cable through our external wall.
Don't forget to do a 'drip loop' to keep water away from the hole.
Drip loop seconded. And once you've started the hole inside, lift the drill so you drill downwards through both walls. And turn off the hammer and be patient for the last 30cm, unless you want to blow the face of your brick off (or a saucer sized bit of render). Use external UV resistant CAT cable, the internal stuff will get brittle and stop working after a year or two unprotected from the sun.
Don't use silicone sealant. Use frame sealant that can be painted over.
Unless your house isn't painted. Then just use the closest coloured sealant you can find.
Clear silicon sealant and mix brick/render dust into it,
Do you need to seal it?
My house needs underfloor ventilation and has vent bricks with holes you can pass a telephone or CAT 6 through (before you crimp the end).
Seems a bit redundant sealing a hole that is there already? I put in a drip loop and left it at that.
Definitely make sure you angle the hole towards the outside. Our house has damp on the living room wall thanks to a now redundant NTL (pre Virgin) cable having been drilled through to let water flow into the house.
Also as above if you have an older house with suspended floors just thread the cable down through a floorboard near your router and out through an air brick. I did this with our wired doorbell to avoid trying to drill a very long thin hole through the wall. Significant crawling was involved but no wall drilling.
