I've compiled a massive family tree, and recorded it on Family Tree Maker [2005] software which is not on line, the software appears to be out of date and it is in danger of crashing once and for all. I want to share this family tree with my children who are no longer living 'at home' and ensure its safe and private. The software i'm using currently has the file extension FTM which doesn't appear to be compatible with Ancestry.com or any of the other major family research sites which you can download family trees onto. Any suggestions as to where would be safe [and possibly free?] to download my family tree so its 'on-line' ? Thanks
Google would suggest that FTM 2017 and later can export to ancestry.com natively. Time to upgrade?

Also, the first thing I'd be doing if I were you is backing up the data file(s). You don't need any bespoke software to just copy a file. Whack it onto OneDrive or Google Drive or something.
Thanks Cougar, Sorry I should have said that I was aware of the upgrade but now specifically looking for an on-line host that could take the file in its current FTM format rather than shelling out around £80 for the upgrade to only use it once to bring the data up to date so i can upload it to a site.
Upload, not download.
And I'd be exporting it to a PDF or Word or something or even an image file, then putting on that on Google Drive.
Uploading! 🙁
Try Gramps. https://gramps-project.org/
Not online, but it is free and open source, and seems to be regularly updated. It can import and export in a variety of formats.

I didn't read too closely because, eh, I don't overly care, but it looked like the upgrade price was $60. It sounds like it's important to you, what value is the massive amount of time you've spent creating this with thirteen year old software and the knowledge you've amassed?
