I'm currently going through an interview process for what looks like a great job, I've had two teams interviews and they went vary well. The Job is in Hailsham doing something similar to what currently doing but in a different industry, better working terms etc.

I currently live in Leicester and my wife has given the go-ahead to continue with the process. Clearly it's not a forgone conclusion but we need to start thinking about what is is actually like to live in that area. We've been looking at houses on Rightmove and it seems like we can get a similar house (3 bed 30s detached) for similar money. Other than that's where the job is, I know nothing about Hailsham. I know Brighton, Newhaven but nothing of other places to look at.

Then obviously I'm on this forum as I ride mountain bikes, what is there to ride around there?

If there's any insight into the general area, what's good, what's not good. Please pass it on.

Thanks in advance!

Hailsham is at the eastern end of the South Downs National park so theres loads of decent off-road and gravel riding and a lot of good legal trails , it also pretty close to Friston forest which is full of very good Singletrack. There are also some fun road/gravel-ish etc routes out across the Pevensey levels, High Weald etc. cuckoo trail cycle route goes right through the town too so unless you like doing uplifts, 'shore and DH you'll be fine.

Can't speak for what it's like to live in Hailsham but it's East Sussex and Ive got friends who live in Eastbourne, Pevensey,  Heathfield and Uckfield and they're all nice places and easy to get our into the countryside or to the coast and London is about 90 mins away by train from Eastbourne

When I moved to Hastings the people there looked down on Hailsham.

After 20 years in Epsom we are looking to move back and Cooden Beach is our favoured search area. Quiet but has a train station to take us to the action. Willingdon is also nice and right at the bottom of the downs.

We also like Peelings Lane in Westham. Rural feel  but really near the trains and Pevensey Levels.

@muddy@rseguy. I've never actually encountered anyone who has ridden the Levels. Does it get really muddy?

Lived in Crawley 1995-2000, and wife is from Heathfield - have a feeling my late father in law taught in Hailsham, commuting from Heathfield.

Its a lovely part of the world. South Downs almost on your doorstep,  North Downs not that far away. Lots of narrow country lanes and a lot of short punchy climbs on and off road. There are a lot of small villages with few amenities, think about what you want/need to have on your doorstep, or you'll be driving a lot - especially if you have kids.

Not a long trip to the coast - Brighton has a great vibe, Eastbourne more "mature". It's the thing MrsMC misses the most, being close to the sea - we moved up to Ilkeston in 2000.

A little surprised at your comments about similar prices - guess it depends on which bit of Leicester uou are in. We moved up here as we couldn't afford a family on one salary down there. MrsMC suggested you treat any house/area at similar prices down there with suspicion till you've seen it yourself.

She also said to remember it's "barth", "parth" and "grarse" down there.

I don't know what your budget is but this seems a real bargain. It's in a very quiet area and has a bigger garden than most stuff this price.

Prices are going down in the area so cheeky offers are worth a go.

Thanks for the replies,

Maybe I should have added that we are now empty nesters and don't necessarily need the same amount of living space. This summer we had our house valued, a range of £350 to £380k was given.

We would like a period property but, I'm guessing like everywhere that they command a premium. MCTD, comment noted at the pricing comparison and area.

To begin with I think I'd rent somewhere on my own and travel down on Sunday and back Friday. It's kind of a dream job that will unlikely come up again elsewhere, so I'd put with a bit inconvenience for a while. Plus my wife is a teacher and notice periods are a little more restrictive in education. So we would have some time to look for something suitable.

To be honest, I'm currently a little overwhelmed with the idea. The original plan was to moved to France once the kids had fledged, my wife is French but it's still is difficult for me being British since brexit and France has probably the most difficult rules for a non-European citizens to move and live there.

Weird, I'd have put it the other way around. When I was growing up my grandparents lived in Hailsham which was nice but quiet. Hastings was a slowly dying seaside town. I recently went back for a funeral - still seems valid to me.

As above, Hastings is looked down on by the surrounding towns...

Hailsham is OK, there's 2 estates that used to be council and have/had a bad rep but some of this is ancient history. There's a lot of new developments to the north and south of the town that has increased the population considerably so there's a bit of pressure on things like doctors/dentists, etc.  On the whole it's not a bad place to live.  As other have said, it's one of several East Sussex towns in a nice part of the country close to places like Brighton if you want some more life.

As others have said the local riding is the South Downs, Friston forest and the usual assortment of local bridal ways.  @zippykona, the levels can be muddy in winter but there's a network of tracks that remain ok.  I've always found the bridleways that traverse the fields to be the toughest going, they can either be energy sapping mud or rock hard hoof prints and rarely anything in between.

Let's be honest Leicestershire isn't know for it's mountainous terrain so most places will be an improvement! 🤣

Unless you get a big kick from riding the edges of ploughed fields!

Don't forget its a shot hop to France from there. Very easy to do a last minute weekend away or even buy a holiday place over there and live between the two houses.

If you're moving to Bexhill you'll need to  budget for a Honda Jazz too!

I'll be getting one of those little electric Peugeots or a cheap Leaf.
Don't forget punk night at The Carlisle in Hastings once a month.

Don't know anything about Sussex but I've visited Leicester a few times so all I can contribute is that I think moving away from Leicester is a cracking idea.
