I had decided to use my mini Mac to play games on rather than buy a playstation. I downloaded Lonely Mountain Demo from Steam.
On my Mac Mini ( which is 18 month old but not an M1 chip) the game is incrediblely laggy, slow and impossible to play. Turning off GPU and something or other smoothing ( as internet advice suggested) makes no difference.
Oddly, downloaded on to my MacBook Air ( which is M1 chip) it plays absolutely fine. But I'm not going to use the MacBook for gaming ...
What am I doing wrong?
How is memory/storage? Any other applications open?
you don't say what spec the Mini is, although the wiki page for that game doesn't mention a Mac version at all, so I wonder if the Steam Mac version is powered by some sort of emulator. Maybe your Mini just doesn't have the grunt for it. It's difficult to overstate just how much more powerful M1/M2 is!!
What am I doing wrong?
Not buying a Playstation? 😁
I'm being flippant of course, but semi-serious. I got out of the PC gaming arena well over a decade ago because it had turned into an arms race. You'd invest hundreds of pounds into a graphics card and then a few months later games require SomeFeature v14 and you only have SomeFeature v13 and you're screwed.
I know precious little about Macs but I can't imagine that a Mac Mini would be a first choice of gaming platform. I bought an Xbox and never looked back.

I have a 10 year old Mac Mini that should play that, something is definitely wrong.
Clicking the OSX tab doesn't seem to work?
