I need to collect my son's partner from Calais on Tuesday. I am double vaccinated, I have a NHS Covid pass to show this. I have a valid UK Passport.

What else to I need to do?

Travelling with DFDS in theory but open to suggestions.

Will a test taken (that shows as negative) in the UK on Monday allow me to travel back on Tuesday?

My experience, France don't care as long as you can prove you are vaccinated. Getting back into the UK is a pain.

A LFT taken within 72hours of coming back, in your case take one before you leave! Then fill out the locator form, this has to be done within 48hours of coming back, so you might as well fill out all the paperwork before you leave in the first place!

Coming back with Eurotunnel tomorrow and went out a week or so ago.

Can they not (more than) half the admin by getting on a boat at Calais without you? Collect them at Dover?

Unfortunately it seems that I cannot book a 'return' trip because of the differing number of occupants in the car. The return trip will include me, son's partner and her two. Apparently foot passengers are not permitted to have two cats with them, sedated or otherwise (the cats that is). Two trips it is then.

Ponders- Do cats get a duty-free allowance?

Off to book a test now...

That is annoying. Hope the “trip” goes well for you.

Take the chicken, then the fox. Bring the chicken back and take the grain. Then go back and get the chicken.

Head to France with an inflatable dinghy in the boot.

Get to France

pick up G/friend and cats

Put g/friend in car, inflate dinghy and put cats in dinghy

Return to Dover with the dinghy being towed by ferry.

Easy

In the before covid times having a passenger made no difference to the price of a ticket, seemed to be charged per van.
So book everyone a return ticket, get to Dover, say only you could come now and get on alone. I can tsee them complaining about fewer people. Then all come back on the return bit of the ticket.

What mrmo says up there but is missing the day 2 test back in the UK. The LFT/Antigen is the one you need to take in France before you arrive back at Port with a certificate to say you a re good.

So on route out

NHS covid pass + have a hard copy just in case
Honour detestation (or whatever) to say you are a good boy and don't have the cat aids
passport

On route home

Negative LFT/Antigen test from France chemist (between €20 and €40 some people have managed to get them free)
Pre-booked UK Day 2 test (which is PCR thing) (Boots is £75 for France)
Passport

UK BF on way out wont give a monkeys what you've got. France BF on way back in wont give a monkeys, but both on the flip were painful for us just over a week ago..

Have you not read the Daily Mail recently? There are thousands of fast boats doing the trip from Calais every day, must be dead easy to jump on one of those. They don't ask too many questions.

Many thanks for the advice, all of it has been welcome.

Things I have learnt today:

Boots website is awful, clunky, laggy and crashes/ does not respond.

Their phone contacts are similarly dire.

Their phone app is slick and works well.

Using a french speaker to book a test in France is the easiest way.

It's good to have a printer!

Trying to sort the Passenger Location form when travelling with DFDS is entertaining- they don't tell you the name of the ship. You need the name of the ship.

Leaving Sunny Carmarthenshire for the English coast on Tuesday afternoon to stay with my sister in Kent, I haven't seen them for a long time. Then catch the boat on Wednesday, get somewhere south of Calais, collect the passenger plus cats and 'Tally Ho' back to Blighty.

You can just walk in to most Boots branches and ask for a pack of LFT tests. no need to endure their website.

All in all it went pretty well. Arriving in Dover I was searched (as usual- what gives here?) and then crossed over to Calais. I was the second vehicle off the boat so it was a super fast exit. The pre-booked antigen test went smoothly but not having 4G made liasing with GF a bit of a pain

There was quite a lot of waiting involved- for the test result, for the 4G to kick in, for the GF to arrive. I finished a book, had a snooze. All in all though not an unpleasant way to spend the day.

GF was late due to a big crash on the autoroute delaying her lift-share so we missed our ferry and had to take the 20;15 instead. I dropped her off with Son#1 at 01:30 and made it home an hour or so later.

Do average speed cameras work in the dark?

They pissed all over the seats. I have spent today dismantling the rear seats and washing them. The car stinks of geriatric feline urine. It's not nice I tell ya.

I thought you said you were vaxxed? Do the 5G chips not work in roaming then?

@Ambrose, since one of our cats got his jaw broken by headbutting a car (or probably the other way round) he's got a rational fear of being in the car as he associates it with the vet doing uncomfortable things to him.

I line the cat box with incontinence bed pads now.

News of the day.

I've been in contact with a Cv19 positive so I'm off to be tested. Yet again! 😷

In better news, Son#1 is treating me to Fatboy Slim tickets in Cardiff. Cheers boy 👍🏼
