ME! Done for bloody speeding. 41 in a 30 zone - a "blackspot" apparently (yeah, at 9 o'clock at night, righto). I hardly ever drive a stupid car, never had points before and I'm coming back from visiting my sick father in hospital, only taking that route because I had to collect my brother as he'd had a back operation for cancer in his spine and couldn't drive.
So I've got a big ol slow Mondeo and the bugger decides to wave his stupid laser gun thing at me.
Now I'm a criminal 🙁
Don't expect any cheer from me today.
Oh yea I could've done a effin driver awareness course! Ha! Would that make me aware of the dangers of doing 40 on an empty road at night?
*Sulks*

I've got a big ol slow Mondeo

not that slow, it seems.

I may not be the first to say this but you really only have yourself to blame and as far as I know the speed limits on urban roads aren't time of day/traffic density dependent 😉

given I'm riding a singlespeed you'll be doing about 40 times my speed so it shouldn't be too difficult 😉

I got my first ever speeding in a 30 zone ticket on boxing day. Bang to rights - I'm usually really careful in 30 zones, but got distracted by someone coming up fast behind me. Not a lot you can do except take it on the chin - although I'll certainly go for the speed awareness course if it keeps my licence clean.

+1

Through our village (30mph) drivers just don't seem to give a sh*t about sticking to any speed limit unless there's a copper sitting at the end of the road. I'd like to see more traffic police spot checking areas.

One of the great things about doing 40km/h over the limit in Tassie is that when you do get caught, they let you off with a compliment on your driving! (unless I get caught again within three years, then I get both fines and points...)

"May I see your calibration certificate?"

I got pegged just before Christmas, 36 in a 30 right next to where the the limit changes to a 50 zone. Speed awareness course for me in a couple of weeks.

How hard is it to go 30mph in a 30mph zone? If you're concentrating and not dicking around with your cd player / iphone / sat nav it really shouldn't be that difficult.

I'd have done the course I reckon if it saved me points.

41 in a 30 is pushing your luck a bit, I reckon. Not sure Plod can ignore someone doing 33% over the limit.

Very unlikely to win any challenge and as you'd have to do it in court you risk a higher penalty when you lose.

I'd have taken the driver awareness course option if it avoids the points and fine.

Well not all 30 limit roads are the same. I rarely get close to 30 when driving in residential roads but the A road passing at the end of my road is a 30 and I bet I'm often close to 40 on that.

Because the next 3 you'll get will make it 6, plus the 3 now have to be informed to your Insurance Co., whereas the course doesn't.

Take the course.

One of my kids got smacked by a car @ 20 mph and was hospitalised for weeks.

Pretty certain he wouldnt be around today of the driver had been doing 41 mph.

Think about it OP...

No sympathy here.

Of all the speed limits, the urban ones are, imo, the most sacred as I believe that car to person interfaces don't turn out too well.

Got Kids ?.

How does it feel when you imagine some scum bag doing 40mph past them, when they should be doing 30 at maximum.
And only when road conditions allow.....

Tut, tut.

You could have at least taken it like a man.
Face the fact that you were wrong, and resisted whinging about it on a public forum.

Had you not been caught, what would it have been next time.
50mph in a 30 mph zone ?.

Sort yourself out.

Those that don't are lying and those with clean licenses are good at not getting caught.

this
41 in a 30, at any time of day is daft

it usually is in a built up area but still not necessarily - 3 am stariht road no cars or pedestrians we have dual carriageways where I live that are 30 for example and yet single lane tracks that are 60 - it is not always clear why the speed limit is higher for single track roads as it would be daft to do 60 on those

nickf - agreed, to an extent. They will also lie to you though.

That's possible, I'm sure. The one I did didn't contain any lies that I spotted, and was extremely BS-free. The guy encouraged debate, pointed out real issues from places where there had been real accidents, covered things like seasonal differences (leaves, damp coners, bud), road positioning, and also pointed out that using 112 rather than 999 will ensure the emergency services will be able to locate you using GPS. Had to take his word for this, but worth knowing.

The physics behind speed and pedestrian deaths are interesting as well, and made me think a lot more.

No, it's not, but if there are laws to follow, with a punishment if you break them, I don't think you can get to uppity about getting caught breaking them and being punished.

Whether the rules are sensible is an other matter entirely....

Unlucky, but certainly don't come up with excuses, regardless of what is going on in your life at that time, your driving a car and should be doing it to the best of your ability.

Take the course, you obviously need to go on it because you think its pointless.

If you dont go on it, what happens next time you get a speeding ticket for driving too fast and not paying attention. Then your insurance will go up just a tad.

There was the problem though, you either were not paying attention and didnt realise you were in a 30, or knew you were in a 30 and didn't keep an eye out for Police checking your speed.

If your going to speed accept the consequences

You are yet another example of the individual in modern society, who thinks the rules shouldn't apply to them.

You even know that place is an accident black spot, and you still speed.
Cos you're you, and you have an excuse.

Expecting my first car related fine soon, bank holiday, empty road, bus lane (weekday rush hour, not 24h), assumed bus lanes weren't in operation but have since checked and they probably are, my mistake, will pay up no arguments if I do get a fine.

No idea what sort of road it is but 41 in a 30 is quite a bit over isn't it?

option 2) £60 fine, 3points, no effect on ins. premiums (I've no proof it would tho)

41 in a 30 zone - a "blackspot" apparently (yeah, at 9 o'clock at night, righto).

"I only speed when I beleive it's safe to do so"

Just as self-righteous as the "I only RLJ when it's safer or there's no traffic"

Optional laws! Brilliant!

I must study my copy of the highway code more closely and see which bits of it I can ignore because they don't suit me.

They're not? I'm sure the law see's it differently. The speed restriction applies regardless of time of day etc whether you think it should or not is irrelevant.

Apparently they're the easiest ones to dispute. As they're really inacurate. Only takes a slight movement of the coppers wrist to completely change the result.

Urban Myth that will likely result in a bigger fine.

Most handheld devices are now lasers. They take about 1000 readings per second; the laser is travelling at around 300,000,000 metres per second, & the point of aim is relatively small so they can be extremely accurate. The only regular calibration needed is on the sights, not the laser (which is usually about every 2 years); the sights are usually done at the start of your tour of duty.

I'm no longer trained in them but in my experience I know of no successful challenge in court.

Think of it like this:
40mph = about 60 feet per second (I think, from dim & distant memory)
Average driver reaction time = 2.5 seconds
Therefore 2.5x60 = 150 feet BEFORE you've started braking. Basically for 150 feet you're a passenger in your own car unable to do anything about anything.

Obviously, reaction times can vary wildly but it's not a bad consideration when you decide to stick yer toe in.

More than 20% above the speed limit and the police should be entitled to break one of your wrists. More than 40% and it should be an elbow.

PEterPoddy I agree that speed isnt' the be all and end all of safe driving however speeding in a built up area is just stupid and NOT BEING AWARE of your speed is stupid.

Fair enough if you know you are doing 100mph in a 70mph and you are an experienced driver (not that I'm condoning doing that speed) but DezB not knowing he was speeding also implies to me a careless driver.

I'm not on my high horse as I have 3 points but I called myself a **** was pi** off at myself, paid the fine and got on with life rather than trying to get sympathy on a forum.
