Yeah shame really, it must have been a big settlement to get dominion to cave on what looked like an obvious win (always a risk they could lose, but the judge was on their side)
Just wondering what terms will be disclosed - very much hope that Fox have to make some kind of mea culpa programme on Tucker Carlson's show
NBC saying $787.5 million dollar settlement, that’s going to hurt even Fox.
They still have another case in New York, so hopefully get stung for at least as much agin!
How much money must they make to be able to absorb that kind of hit?
Guardian are saying that all the top presenters knew they were spreading lies...
think they were scared of more juicy stuff coming out with the appointment by the judge of a special master to make sure fox were complying with disclosure.
love that Trumps winning play for fox was to double down on the lies and prove them as the truth in court 😀
I was looking forward to Murdoch getting shafted in public
I was looking forward to a thread about brake adapters and forks

The internal emails between the presenters are very illuminating.

That would have been in the Bike forum...this is the Chat forum 😉
There's a bike forum???
Predictable.
There was no way Rupes would allow a situation where he would be compelled to testify in court.
Lachlan, Fox execs, producers and presenters are all expendable in Rupes' eyes but...not for him.
As klunk pointed out ^^^ some interesting stuff has already been disclosed but the better/best will now, probably, stay hidden - likely covered by non disclosure as part of the settlement.
Will be interesting to see if this causes changes in Fox's editorial guidelines, presenter line up, apparent obsession with retaining support of trump's maga base - or will it be BAU.
Odds on an apology from any their top presenters - slim to none.
EDIT - to add...reported that Bret Baier, Fox chief political correspondent, repeatedly pushed for a Sunday evening special to investigate trump's allegations of a rigged election but his requests were consistently ignored.
There is another lawsuit from Smartmatic underway.
Whilst I assume they will take the same approach of silencing with cash rather than risk Murdoch its going to hurt the bottomline.
It's a huge chunk of money but it's a shame they didn't take it all the way- it'd have been beautiful to have Hannity and Carlson testify, never mind Murdoch. It also seems like the settlement hasn't had much in the way of restrictions on Fox- they're reporting "This settlement reflects FOX’s continued commitment to the highest journalistic standards" and are hilariously talking about allowing the country to move forward and avoiding division and strife... I'd really hoped any settlement would include ritual humiliation and admission of shitehawkery, big top headline public apologies and admissions of intentional lying and such.
Fox have more of these coming, as do Dominion, so it's a good start. Fox are also getting sued by their own shareholders and there doesn't seem to be much hope of them winning that one now. Shame.
Dominion have pending cases against newsmax, oan, rudy, sidney powell and mike lindell the pillow bloke.
None of them have deep pockets like Rupes.
Probably too late for some profiteering by buying Domimion shares - if they're a listed company.
As klunk pointed out ^^^ some interesting stuff has already been disclosed but the better/best will now, probably, stay hidden – likely covered by non disclosure as part of the settlement.
The fact that it suddenly became clear that Rupes actually had an executive role, and would be obliged to testify publicly probably made a big difference.
How much money must they make to be able to absorb that kind of hit?
They've painted themselves into a corner. If they stop the conspiracy theory nonsense, their audience will abandon them and go to another channel that tells them what they want to hear. In order to keep their audience, they have to keep promoting this nonsense. The settlement is just the cost of staying in business.
How is it that an organisation called "dominion" are the good guys?
Smartmatic will be looking a far bigger settlement - or attempt to screw Fox into the ground if the case goes ahead.
Dominion sued for $1.6 billion and settled for $787.5; about 50%.
Smartmatic are suing for $2.7 billion so, as they say in the US, do the math.
I hope this helps(in some way)putting the frighteners ,on what's left of the orange one's legal team.
The other wrinkle I've heard is that now the precedent has been set those jailed due to their actions at Jan 6th now have a pretty good case should they decide to sue Fox for saying that the lies they knowingly told were the reason they marched on the capitol and ended up in jail and with their lives ruined.
Oh, and the people who were hurt have a pretty good case, as do the families of those who died.
Oh, and apparently some major Fox shareholders are also now sending letter which hint that they're also preparing a legal action against the channel's management for loses incurred.
This is not over, not by a long shot. The Smartmatic suit is just part of what's still coming down the line.
seems the cable network providers are not happy

talk of states wanting to recoup the cost of recounts
If Fox had fought it and lost, there would be appeal after appeal as Fox stalled paying whatever damages were awarded. This way Dominion get a cash sum worth vastly more than the value of their company.
As others have pointed out, this case and probably the Smartmatic case could merely be opening the floodgates for a thousand other claims.
If Murdoch hadn't put himself back on the staff in 2019, would Fox News have fought this one out? Even if they lost they could continue to deny the obvious thus postponing or scuppering other potential case. Settling the way they did makes that far more difficult but saves Murdoch's somewhat reptilian skin.
Fascinating link there Klunk. Didnt realise that Fox profits were so heavily dependent on extorting the providers who in effect pay Fox a subsidy (or rather their customers do, wether they want Fox News or not)
Another development is that there is a push to get Fox news removed from military installations. It's been pumped out on every screen at every base for 20 years and there's a lot of them (both bases and screens).
One effect is to massage their viewing figures as they count every Peron on the base as a viewer. The sad truth is that the majority of them are watching Fox news all day and every day. Not a lot else to do if you're stuck on base...and woe betide you of you want to change the channel!
After 20 years of that I think we can safely say the American military has been radicalized. Following orders to prepare arms to be sent to Ukraine whilst watching a tv blasting out Russian propoganda; "This is not our fight"..."Trump thinks Putin is a great guy"... Biden's not your real president, the election was stolen" etc, etc.
😂 glad about thay one
Watched an interesting article about why they've likely taken the settlement and run. Apparently if they settle now, Fox basically have to stump up the cash here and now. Get a settlement after trial and it's good luck trying to get the money, could take years, and they wouldn't have got anywhere near what they were asking for in the first place. Good ol' US law. Also, nothing new and juicy would likely come out, what we've already heard is just rerun in the trial, obviously we've lost the opportunity to watch Murdock(s), Carlson etc. squirm on the witness stand though.
Plus on a personal level, there would still be a lot of pain for dominion witnesses, certainly in terms of death threats and abuse should it have gone to trial so its no wonder they've taken the cash.
Interesting to see what Smartmatic do, despite their retoric of taking it to trial.
Mr Pillow Man, and Rudy are basically screwed though.
"Interesting to see what Smartmatic do, despite their retoric of taking it to trial."
They're asking for even more money aren't They? Had Fox settled earlier then a lot of the evidence that came out would have been surpressed. So although we didn't get to see Murdoch and Co. On the stand, the truth came out.
Fox played this one terribly, Smartmatic say they have some much more juicy evidence to share so do Fox want to take this one to the wire? or would it be better for them to settle early (but not cheaply)
I reckon Smartmatics' shareholders are spending money as they sleep, resting their heads on a My Pillow for that extra bit of schadenfreude.
Apparently if they settle now..
Plus I'm guessing they have shareholders as well so they have to be considered. If you have a guaranteed mahoosive sum right now, or maybe risk losing it all and having to pay damages then you might get sued by shareholders down the line as well if you aren't careful. I'm not sure they had any choice really even if they had wanted to go to court.
Actually, I’m not that surprised that a man who sells pillows is ani-woke.
Hope Mr Pillow isn’t expecting a soft landing…
Pillow guy is going down.
He's going to get the feathers knocked out of him
