He's good at 3 word slogans for sure

But his arrogance is his downfall, re-editing his blog to show he predicted the pandemic* is textbook narcissism

* the next time a Tory MP says that this is unprecedented, someone should point out that cummings predicted it !

If it is to come it needs to be today or tomorrow. A nice sunny weekend and the great unwashed will have forgotten about it.

There was mention of potentially relaxing restrictions on outdoor meetings in England in a couple of weeks, so I assume Cummings and co are intending to just ride it out till then. Once people are allowed a bit more freedom there will be less immediate outrage about "why am I totally locked down when he wasn't?" and Cummings gets off the hook.

The "eye test" excuse is a text book dead-cat distraction. Obviously nonsensical, but it is all that people are talking about and making fun of.

Cummings explicitly broke the lockdown rules more than once and has lied about his behaviour. Those are documented facts; there's no interpretation or grey areas. It is utterly depressing that he can get away with this and the government can dismiss it by just saying "He didn't do anything wrong". No consequences, apparently no way to force anyone to take responsibility.

This whole affair makes me both sad and angry.

For years now I've been watching in amazement as Trump gets away with scandal after scandal, simply by shouting louder than anyone else can.

Evidently our government has been watching too, and decided they can get away with the same game- and unless someone comes out with some more dirt on Cummings in the next few days, they will have. Once they've learned that trump-style leadership works as well here as it does in the states, this is only the beginning.

My only real hope is that this hastens Scotland's exit from the UK. As a nation we voted overwhelmingly against this shower of Tory *****, yet here we are being governed by them.

Well after 6 days in hiding, my MP, James Daly, has broken cover to say that he's sat on the fence on the issue and we shouldn't rush to judgment

So now that Durham Police have confirmed that Dominic Cummmings did indeed break lockdown guidelines, I'll expect a suitable denunciation. In a week or so. Possibly...

Yep,

Saw Nazir Afzal (former chief prossecutor) interviewed on TV, calm and dignified as always but you could see the smoke coming out of his ears.

Just thinking about the left wing bias at the BBC and the storm around Emily Matlis and it made me think of all the other current and recent lefty nutjobs at the beeb.

Jeremy - strongly considered standing as Tory MP - Paxman
David - Bullingdon boy - Dimblewit.
Andrew - chairman at the Spectator - Neil
Laura - My sources / boss tells me' - kuensberg
Nick - Cameron's fluffer - Robinson

And Fiona - 'tell the audience about your racist feelings' - Bruce.

They have said that the drive to Durham was not a breach and the driving while blind only a minor infringement.

Using my powers of prediction which are a match for DC's I'm going to refer to Chief Constable Jo Farrell as Dame Jo Farrell.

It does smack of "We think he may have breached the rules but we're under pressure to not take it any further so we'll leave it at naughty-naughty but no harm done."

So that means we can all go wandering wherever we want and don't worry about eye tests or remembering your glasses, just drive carefully. Certainly explains all the people out and about round me and the drivers behaving like twunts.

Durham police had a policy of not fining people if the breach of the rules was minor and the person involved followed their advice. Their position on cummings trip to Barnard Castle is consistent with that.

Why the met are not looking into him gong back to work after being in contact with Covid is a different matter

Hey, remember all the references to Dido Johnson made yesterday to the liason committee, the Tory peer ex-Talk Talk director (when they had the cyber attack), who's now in charge of the NHS Informatics track n trace app thing (obvious choice with her record)? Guess what - she's a director of Cheltenham Racecourse (alledgedly), the lastest mass sports gathering in the country! 🙂

These people are not dumb.

Does anyone else think that the DC story is a deliberate distraction?

Sorry i haven't read all 43 pages of this thread - because DC isn"t worth it - so my theory may have already been discussed.

While we are all getting cross with different rules for us and them, the anger over thousands of needless deaths is being diffused. Isn't DC's job to make the government look good / less bad and to manipulate the press and government's message ? Isn't he using the Jose Moaneo diversion tactic ? Crikey he even managed to squeeze in a riddle with the pathetic excuse (Barnard Castle) and editing an old media post to further divert attention. Oh how he and BJ will be chuckling. He knows it will blow over and even if he gets sacked he will back before the next general election (Pritti Patel) and he can manage things from behind the scenes in the meantime.

The “eye test drive”, talking about taking his kid to hospital, and blog edit, may well all be distraction techniques… but they are to get us talking about anything other than his blatant “escape to the country” antics… I don’t think going to Durham or Barnard Castle were anything other than him doing what is best for him and his family, and that is why both were kept quiet. It’s game theory again… he needs the rest of us to do our “civic duty”, while he looks out for number one only.

Never mind that her old man is a chortling racist.

Is anyone else experiencing an unhealthy amount of anger at the phrase "laying doggo" used by Ms Wakefield?

"Oh yah, I mean he was tooooootally in-car-par-sitated, daaaaaarling, completely doggo, in fact".

And yet, apparently he is portraying himself as the enemy of the metropolitan elite. When he lives in a large townhouse in Islington, he was a journo and his missus is a 'writer' (although her prose is indescribable) with a super-rich Daddy with oodles of land they can retire to?

Hypocrisy is something only the little people have to worry about, I guess.

That Brexit/Agriculture Bill sneaking through is a prime candidate

I've seen this a couple of times.. but I thought parliment is in recess so nothing is going through?

I think part of the issue with this is that many people are still framing this as brexiteer/remoaner issues; including a lot of the polling about perception of the issue. This makes it easy for the Govt to dismiss as sour grapes. This particular issue has nothing to do with Brexit and if it was treated as independant I think the chances of him staying would be slimmer.

Starmer was smart not to push for a Brexit extension, by doing so he not only left the Tories to wallow in a mess of their own making, he decoupled Brexit from the Coronacrisis. The Tories can sling all the mud they like but they can't find a political target on which it will stick.

Nothing, particularly time, will disguise the fact that the Government has lost control of the primary instruments of State.

That one is an absolute stinker. Jenrick has admitted "unlawfully" signing off on the project at the last minute to save his pal £40 million quid.
What a crook.

Heads up for ITV news as well.

On the nightly news after the Rose Garden presser they led by framing the situation as a Trumpian grab for power.

They then followed up by suggesting that dissenting Tory MP's who weren't calling for Cummings resignation were pushing to make a deal that if Cummings stays the Cabinet has to undergo radical changes, putting some grown ups back in charge and reinstating the authority of individual Cabinet offices.

If this were to happen Cummimgs role would become obsolete, as his only purpose is to destroy the traditional democratic institutions. Boris would then be the puppet of the Cabinet for as long as he is usefull to them or for as long as he can put up with the humiliation.

Surely Jenrick should now be prosecuted?

It’s coming to something when a government minister gets fingered for a 40 million quid fraud and nobody bats an eyelid, as by the standards that we expect from these gang of shysters, that’s neither here nor there.

The Tory head of the council, who resigned the party whip in disgust, was on the radio at lunchtime.

That was 40 million that would have gone into the coffers of the local council.

Have a think about that for a minute. He committed fraud to save his mate 40 million quid that would have gone into local government specifically to fund local infrastructure projects in a high dep area

They really are total scum!! They are absolutely devoid of a single shred of human decency

Cumstain is going to get away with it, bastard.

Groups of up to six can meet in private outdoor spaces so long as members of different households stay 2m apart. This is very good news for grandparents wanting to see grandchildren (and I am genuinely happy for them).

But it will diffuse a lot of the anger of the boomer gammons. This is the group that will have shocked De Pfeffel most by getting bolshy over the actions of Cumstain.

Given that ScotGov are allowing up to 8 folk from two family groups to meet in the same circumstances, I'd say that was pretty much on the cards for at least a couple of weeks.

Mother Theresa was a fairly nasty piece of work

At least she believed in something. It reminds me of the scene in The Big Lebowski where Walter effortlessly flips from criticising people as Nazis to criticising them for being nihilists by saying of National Socialism "At least it's an ethos".

I like to think that lying and getting away with it would at least prompt May to feel a bit guilty. Johnson and Cummings are probably playing the biscuit game to celebrate right at this moment.

Six months and his job is done, then he'll become a global doctor evil for hire, offering to shatter the fragile democracy in some developing country somewhere where his mates, the JRM's and the Aaron Banks types can plunder all the booty. Just (a rather depressing) thought.

If he clings on for six months its a no deal Brexit. If he goea we'll end up leaving with a deal. There'sstill time for him, and Boris to screw up, if the R number goes back above one it'll be seen as the Cummings bounce. He'll own it.

Yes, unless the media or Starmer come up with something else now or in the future.   You can be sure that we and Labour will remember this in 4 years though, the Tories have a hell of a lot of work to do if they can ever remain in power beyond that.

I did note that Cummings has been remarkably invisible.  Is this one of his tactics e.g. he told Boris that it’d be a tough few days but it’ll blow over in a week?  His MO is to blind by headlines so yes I’m agreeing that lockdown relief announcements are intended to reduce the impact.  We never had an announcement - re June 15 - so far in advance before.
