A few years ago the thought of getting up in front of people and doing something used to frighten the hell out of me. Total screaming abdab material to the point that I'd actively avoid it.

This weekend I'll be working as a physio at a game where there will be a crowd of a maybe three thousand watching and rather than being terrified I'm really looking forward to it.

It's amazing how things change.

You got any similar stories?

Sub 38 10k run. Just required focus and effort with a bit of belief.
tbh most barriers to success are in the mind/self-created. Glad you got through your barriers, takes courage IMO

Except, Glupton, the crowd aren't gonna be actually watching you are they? *'Whoaaa, look at their physio!, awesome!'* Good on you though, hope it goes ok. 😉

For me, standing in front of prisoners doing an induction talk & explaining what the prison rules are. (etc etc)

I've never been able to somersault despite trying, and hurting myself. Last year I decided to learn before I hit 50, went to trampoline lessons and managed it by the skin of my teeth. Still not 100% but getting better and want to go for the backflip next.

If you ever get the chance to try trampolining i'd jump at it (ho ho)

@dandax - it's not difficult you just have to find a suitably ugly girl ... I'll get my coat

OP sorry to defile your very worthy thread. Doing new stuff keeps us all young, I love it !

Sleepy. Back somersaults are easier! Way more time to spot your landing.

On a similar note, big, slow, stretched out, cruciform backflips off cliffs (into water!). SUCH a good feeling, and really not that hard.

Walk

See the snapping off foot thread for details. Sounds trivial but being able to walk to the bike/pub/anywhere is a much underrated ability

hardluck WCA. Life sucks sometimes. And then you go for spin in your newly spannered motor or for a ride, or both and life gets better 🙂
For me ride skateparks on a BMX. Getting much more confident in basic stuff of late. I suppose one massive obstacle is people telling you,you cannot do things (probably because they've read it in a rag..err sorry paper - so it must be true.)

Yeah, if you'd turned up at my hospital bed... oh, 8 years ago I think it would be now... and told me I'd be riding a bike now, like I do, I wouldn't have believed you.

Similar but I remember on an early visit to glentress, going very slowly round the red... Saw the black exit from Pie Run and said to ChrisL, if I ever show any inclination to ride that thing, just break my arms for me to save me the effort 😆 How times change.

Now that Sir is a mid life crisis to be proud of ... 😀

Forget fast cars n fast women or being a triathlon bore/MAMIL like myself

Well played

I'm jealous of my kids when they go gymnastic .... You've inspired me, I'm going to ask about adult sessions

Completing a marathon in a decent time, then finishing an ultra marathon. All this year at the age of 41 🙂

Yeah I fancy an Ultra this year.

When I've finsihed marathons in the past I kind of always thought "Is that it!?! ... I wanna carry on".

Guess I haven't been trying hard/runing fast enough

After having Pneumonia a couple of years ago, I never though I would be doing much sport again.

Now I am determined to get fitter than I have ever been... Just appears to be a slower process than in the past!

Getting up at 0530 to be at work for 0700. Teenage me would never believe it possible. (Early 20s me would also be pretty gobsmacked)

i tuck my head down, lean forward, push with my feet and aim to lamd on the flat of my shoulders.
'Cos that's how I roll.

Go for it, the feeling at the end is incredible, a much better high than a marathon... and when you tell the people at work you've done one they're invariably gobsmacked 🙂

Not having to worry where the nearest toilet is. 18 months of chronic ulcerative colitis makes you somewhat nervous about shitting ones pants...

Ride a unicycle - though I'm not totally sure I never thought I'd be able to do it. Juggle - yes that is related, as it wasn't something I was ever interested in doing before (and I'm not sure if it counts, because I can't yet, but I'm close enough to be sure I will be able to).

Got a job, got somewhere to live, got family who care, got mates. For a bit I didn't think all that would be my life at all.

Raced in a peloton of 105 including elites, pros & full time riders from all over the world. Was riding so well that I didn't recognise myself & even got into a small group of 10 or so off the front of the bunch. 🙂

@jambalaya, Unfortunately my other half is rather good looking 🙁 Could do with doing some squats though to tighten up a bit.

Definitely Public speaking. Most I've done is 200 people and it totally messed me up. As a bona-fida geek, it's what hell will look like for me. Sweating like a pig I was.

I look at people who can do this easily and at first they filled me with envy. It's so natural for them to be stood in front of loads of people, all looking at them listening to what they've got to say.

Then I realised they were all egotistical, vain, attention seekers and stopped feeling envious. 😉

Didn't make it any easier for me though.
