Doing a 'Charity Event' but which charity - STW decide?

I have signed up to do the Motoscape Rally down to Venice in September. I am doing this because it should be fun with an old mate and enjoy a good road trip. Lots/most of the others taking part seem to be doing it as a charity raising thing so I was wondering if I should do the same?

It is quite a trip in my oldest car, currently in the garage with an undiagnosed engine fault causing misfires and a 40mph top speed which is a little worrying. I am sure I can post up lots of photos and even scribe an interesting blog while travelling but I feel a bit awkward about claiming that what is basically a jolly holiday for me should also be a charity event.

I am happy to turn it into a charity event like the Big Bike Bash which was always a charity event even though it was only ever a party for me, and that raises over £25,000 a year nowadays. So, assuming I turn it into a charity appeal, what should I offer those who sponsor me?

My first thoughts were:
1) Exclusive Access to my daily blog
2) Exclusive access to my full phot journal, as opposed to the limited photos published elsewhere
3) Chat and request options so they can interact

I will need to work out how to do all that so suggestions are welcome

I have a couple of ideas for charities I could donate to but as this was never intended as a charity appeal, I don't feel obliged to donate to a specific charity. Any passionate pleas from STWers are welcome and will be considered otherwise it is likely to go to a mental health / health recovery focussed charity.

Playing devil's advocate, will many people want to sponsor you to do a roadtrip jolly?

Dont do fun things under the pretext of doing it for charity especially something costly

Didn't post before, but was basically going to suggest that you may not get too many takers to sponsor you to drive a ( presumably) old, inefficient and smelly heap of a car on a totally unnecessary journey to somewhere 2,000 km away.

Take a few photos of the car at home, donate your £1,000 petrol money to the charity direct, then yes I'll chuck in a tenner 😉

You did ask....

Cool. You have all supported my view NOT to do it which is why I didn't consider it initially.

Glad I am in tune with the STW hive mind

🙂

*Old inefficient - actually a 1997 BMW in an old suit that does mid-late 30s mpg and has the catalytic converter etc so not quite an old heap, but I get your point.

Might try a NOT FOR CHARITY drive instead - you still get the Exclusive Access stuff but just need to chuck some money in the charity of your choice - perhaps a car scrappage scheme?

I would've thought that a blog / photo journal would be better served in drumming up interest in sponsorship rather than the other way around.

Cougar - that still depends on whether I should do it for charity at all. It really doesn't seem appropriate to claim charity smugness for what I am doing anyway.

I might do a blog/vlog whatever in the lead up and during the event anyway and let people donate to their charity of choice.

Any good blog/vlog software that is free and easy for a Samsung S22 Ultra?

So don't put the cart before the BMW. "I'm doing this thing, I'm not doing it as a fundraiser but anyone would like to make a donation to [preferred charity] in order to cheer me on then here's a link."

Could you fill the car up with baked beans maybe?
You'd get loads of sponsors then. 👍
