Firstly , sorry this is not coming from a happy place.

My big dog Dave is dieing, he has more tumor than liver and we only found out Monday. Friday we are having sausages for breakfast going for a walk in the sunshine then visiting the vets for the last time.

He has been my rock, also he's a bit of a dick. I am in bits about it. I don't think anything else has ever made me feel this broken. I know some people will say it's only a dog but we can't have kids and we take dogs out of rescue centres and we try to give them a good life.

But to cap it all off my dad has dementia and his dog is pretty much what keeps him grounded in reality. Dog had a stroke last night, my mum and old Irish nurse (pretty hard-nosed) phones me in tears. I have to go there after work to take them to the vets for his last visit.

Why the **** does being an adult have to be so shit?

Dogs are such great friends to us. Over the years I think I miss the ones that had the most character most! ie the ones that can be a bit of a dick sometimes. Think of all the great times you have spent with him and feed him those sausages.

Check with the vet on your dad's one. Dogs can get Idiopathic Vestibular disease which many will recover from with time. Does depend if there are other things going on and how badly he is affected too.

It’s an absolute bastard when this happens, and it’s absolutely okay to be in bits about it.  Enjoy the last couple of days with your buddy, make those last happy memories, then give him a good ending.
We had to do this last September with our 17 year old collie, and I’m glad my final memory is of her sleeping in my arms, wrapped in her favourite blanket, in the sunshine in our back garden.

feel for you.

Had dogs for 30 years - it doesn’t get any easier but it still wouldn’t stop me from getting another. Make those last moments special and reflect on the lifetime of joy they’ve given you.

So sorry to hear this, especially as it's a not just the one dog. They're part of the family, you will have given them joy & had a great time with them, for the so so limited time they have with us, what more could we or they ask for? There is no need to be embarrassed or feel you need to hide your feeling for them. Just take some time and give the another rescue mutt a chance

Anyone one of the opinion that 'it's just a dog'  is dead inside and has no heart.

I've become a far more emotional person since having a dog, she's a total dick, has cost me a fortune, broken my heart and I'll cry like a baby as soon as I think about her ever not being around. I think when it does happen, I'm driving to the alps and hiding out there for a few months, hopefully with snow to play with.

One of our dogs, Jasmine [jam, jammer, J Dog] died on Monday.
She was nearly 15, had an amazing life and gave us everything, including one of her daughters who we still have.

She didn't even need us to make the decision about when to take her - she just fell asleep watching TV. 😓

We'll miss her every day. Dogs are amazing.

Dogs are great especially the stupid or crazy ones. They are the ones who get under your skin the most.

I have had two dogs die over thirty years of ownership and I have not know grief like it. Admittedly my wife and I have three parents left but never underestimate how close a relative needs to be before they rise above a dog.

Lost my dog over a year ago now, miss her every day. 15 years of happiness and then nothing and then **** me if my mum's dog died a few months later. My mum has dementia too and her dog was her world. She has though coped ok to be honest. You have my deepest sympathy for what it's worth. Glad you get to say goodbye in a way as my dog...well it was quick...although your time will be tough.

Sorry to hear about your big dog Dave. Just think of all the happiness and memories he has brought you over the years.

My friend's dog Sidney died suddenly earlier this year.  Even though he wasn't my dog I was very upset and a few tears were shed. Sidney had stayed at my place on several occasions when his Mum went overseas and felt very much at home even sleeping on my bed, and I have many memories of little adventures with him and sometimes also with his Mum (those Google photos that keep popping up reminding you what you were doing on a certain date a year or two ago often feature the lovely Sidney and bring back some lovely memories).

Sorry, that does sound shit.

Our 15 year old collie had this about six months back. Kept falling over, staggering around in circles, couldn't eat for a few days. Looked pretty terminal at the time. But some anti-sickness meds from the vet and a bit of time and she's back to her old self now. So, fingers crossed for your Dad.

Feel for you enormously op.

Can't even think about the day I'll be saying goodbye to my Harold. He's a complete dick, a huge burden and stops me doing a lot of things,  but has become so much of me.

Thoughts are with you.

Both mine are coming to the end of the road. They are my family and I can't bare to think of the day I lose them

I think most dog owners would love that to be the way. Just one day they go to sleep and never wake up. I hope mine do that..just not quite yet.

Sending big hugs OP

Sorry. Have recently been through this with Bert of this parish. Be strong for him, keep the mood light with plenty of tickles and soothing words, the final act is kind, painfree and dignified and the most kindest thing you can do for Dave. It's the biggest adventure of them all but he has to go first to find all the best places to walk and run about, the deepest snowdrifts to dive into and get his stick collection together. He'll show you these places one day.

I broke down and was in floods of tears that weekend afterwards, I am now writing this, it's proof I was a good doggo dad. The consolation I take from it is that we also couldn't have children so that large part of my heart reserved for what would have been children went to Bert instead and I'm sure like your Dave he had the absolute best life.

We had to say goodbye to Charlie about 6 weeks ago now , miss her like mad . They're part of your family.  Weekends feel weird still as even if we didn't have much on We'd all head out for a dog walk and have a coffee and a hot chocolate somewhere , we went for a walk last weekend but without Charlie it felt a bit pointless.

We have her a good life and in return she was the best dog you could ever hope for and I'm sure you and Dave had the same deal .

Gone 1530 today. Wagging tail to the end although he managed a sound "don't you ****ing dare" growl to the vets. He fought it.
