Sadly our elderly next door neighbour had a stroke. However, she is now wanting to see visitors (positive sign...) and requested that our faithful hound visited. So we did today. Strange walking into a hospital with a dog, but my goodness, what a welcome and happy smiles.

Does anyone on here regularly take their dog as a sort of pet therapy into hospitals, hospices, car homes?

I'd be happy to do it if it helped some folks.

Yeah we quite often get dogs that come in to see patients. It's obviously a company / charity and I don't know if the dogs have to be vetted in advance. Most people seem to like them but I do wonder if it's a bit confusing for some people.

Here you go...

I interviewed Julia Carling when she brought her labrador to the local hospital back in the late 1990s, so it's been going on a while.

Yeah quite common and becoming more popular. Therapy dogs turn up quite often at the Hospice my wife is works at.

She has taken one of our dogs in from time to time as well, if a patient has asked to see him after he maybe comes up in conversation. He’s a chocolate Labrador, so prone to being ‘excitable’ but it’s as if a switch flicks over when he’s there. He stands at the side of the bed, rests his head by the patients side and is nice and calm.

We used to hire meeting space in a local Hospice where we’d get to meet the resident ‘hospice dog’ - a fabulously chilled spaniel who’s job was to just sit quietly with people.

Did a bit of work in a care home last week and arrived just as a visiting pony was leaving.

Dogs can’t go in the X-ray but cat scan.

NHS lothian policy is that dogs can be brought in but must be vaccinated and insured and the ard manager must see the documents first.  outfits like therapets do organised visiting

Our Trust has a dog that does regular ward rounds.

I don’t think they let any old dog in though
