That was almost me this morning. Stupid dog owner. Cycling into work on the Fallowfield Loop just before Sainsbugs as you head west, fair few folk around, cyclists, walkers and about 3 dog walkers on this section. One dog owner at far left side, I passed on far right, except the dog lunged across 6-8 feet and got it's claws into my left leg. I was doing about 15 mph, not much I could do other that swear loudly. Could see it was claws only as there was also a muddy patch. It's drawn some blood and each scratch is 3-4 inches long. Cleaned up and slapped sudocrem on it - plenty of horse sh1t on the path. Will keep an eye on it for infection.
If I see her tomorrow/next week I'll be having words - creatures of habit these dog walkers. Only a brown/white spaniel type dog.
Grrr
Should have kicked it in the head.

That's terrible that it went for your leg, but 15mph is a little fast to be passing walkers and loose dogs maybe?
Hope you're OK.
I always slow right down so as not to surprise dogs/animals and if they run over, I stop and say hello.
Unfortunately pedalling off at speed is sometimes the worst thing you can do. In a dogs head, that's telling them to chase you. It gets them excited.
Not right, but reality.
Never been bitten yet with this approach but obviously no approach is 100% reliable I suppose.
But anyway, yay! Not had a dog thread for a few weeks.
Carry on. 🐶👍
4 pages, as it’s not been long since the last one.
Owner did see me and other cyclists, just not paying attention. It's the first time one has ever got near me, as I always pass wide. I was freewheeling so estimating my speed at that point.
I'm usually more bothered about the dog sticking it's nose near the spokes or chain rings.
At least it's teeth didn't get me, otherwise I'd be off to A&E for a tetanus boost ! The area will be flooded with bikes from next week, the students are back.
Should have kicked it in the head.
I assume you mean the owner.
That sucks - were they aware you were approaching? Did you scare the dog?
I walk my dogs in the FofD which is thick with MTBers as you can imagine. If I thought my dogs were going to chase and attack the riders they’d definitely be on a lead at all times (they don’t, they’re not interested in bikers).
It’s not the dogs fault, it all on the owner.
Idiot owners. Round here there are so many mad dogs and useless owners since Covid. I know what my BC chases and doesn't etc, I am over protective of her, and others. Straight on the lean and keep near me, on a short lead.
BTW I dont get the amount of people who just stroke her without asking me first when we are out with her near people. What lunatic does that?!!
Too many idiots in Surrey/Near London 🙂
My old dog just disliked people and ignored them. The number of dog people who came up to stroke him was incredible. Even after a "don't he doesn't like strangers" hand would come forward. He was very good at a full on all teeth snarl.
It was always people approaching him. Parents got nippy when I said their kids couldn't pet him. People are dicks.
Owner did see me coming from some distance - I wasn't the only cyclist to pass just the dog decided my leg was tasty. The owner and dog were literally right at the side of the path (it's pretty wide - old rail line) and me on the other - it just lurched - wasn't even on an extending lead - a short one - it probably took her with it, but I didn't slow, just kept freewheeling.
One of those things, but if you had a dog that had a tendency to go for anything moving, you wouldn't take it near the Floop - it's like the M1 for bikes.
@fossy that's shit. All I can do is offer my apologies on behalf of that clown, not that it'll change her attitude, awareness or behaviour.
They exist sadly and pose a risk to their hounds and everyone else whom it might snap at.
I've spent a fair bit of coin over the years with some of my rescues with trainers to address behavioural challenges. 9 times out of 10 it's been about training me!
I guess some won't the pooch but with minimal effort or cost.
Mine goes for bikes, and for that reason I avoid shared paths, and areas rife with bikes. He is on lead and muzzled unless we are playing games (you know Chess, Cluedo etc.) and I can see the area is clear of things he might react to.
It is for the owner to have the dog under reasonable control and do what is possible with training but they cannot account for every situation. Giving the person the benefit of the doubt, maybe it is the first time it has happened? Highly unlikely but you never know so go gently if you speak to them, they are probably mortified, and highly apologetic.
I'll change my aftershave tomorrow. Funny how it decided to eat me, maybe it liked my Hugo Boss "Eau de Boeuf" ! 🙂

The same happened to me early this year. The owner shouted at me for not using the bell, even though she'd been facing me while her dog took a crap off the side of the cycle path. She'd have been able to see me coming for about 200m, but apparently that's not enough when you're daydreaming. ( I had actually called, telling her I was passing. She hadn't heard, but the dog had, that's why he went for me.)
I see her regularly, still. She is now very careful about keeping an eye out for bikes, and shepherding the dog to one side. I suspect that I wasn't the only biker that the dog went for.
