Anyone got any idea how much a passport for my Collie would cost and even if it's worth doing over putting him in a kennel while we go away?

any advice appreciated as I would like to go to europe this summer and hopefully take him with us

Just ring a few vets for quotes. They'll do the whole thing start to finish. Can't remember how much it cost us but it was a lot cheaper than a week's boarding. Factor in cost of getting the dog wormed in France on the way back. The timescales for this tend to change on what's prevalent (I think) and are always on the defra website. This summer it was between 48 and 120 hours from date of return. Eurotunnel also charges £15 each way for a dog.

No, they don't have to be renewed afaik. They're tied to the microchip.

No probs.

We did find that accommodation & campsites were a bit less dog friendly on the continent than in the UK. So you'll need to do a bit of research before going. There are plenty places that'll take dogs, just not as many as you might hope (IME).

You do not have to renew the passport but you must keep up to date with the injections ,especially the rabies, but that normally lasts for 3 years(thats how our vet dated it ).
You'll have to pay initially for the rabies injection and blood test, and a microchip if the dog doesn't have one.

For travel in EU, they just need to be microchipped ( if not done already) and then vaccinated against rabies. Passport issued and then 3 weeks later they are good to go. cost prob under £100 and then just booster for rabies every 3 years

Google Pet travel scheme.

Rabies valid for 3 years in most cases. Do have to factor in cost of having them wormed in Europe in the 24 -120 hours before retry too. No need for blood tests etc now since jan 2012.
