Anyone using or used one..... The mutt has gone awol chasing deer and rabbits twice in the last couple of months so the wife wants me to get a tracker fitted. I've had a read through a few internet sites but would like some real world thoughts. Many thanks in advance.

Do you want to stop him chasing, or find him after he's finished chasing ?

I have this issue with one of mine atm and it's looking likely that an e-collar is his best option.

There's a whole thread of me getting abuse about it on here if you do a search.

If you just want to find him after he's done, then a cheap gps collars are advertised everywhere.

I have a Karelian Bear Dog (hunting dog) and am on Facebook's Finland KBD group. The majority use Garmim units - pricey but a KBD will do some serious miles tracking deer/bear/wildboar etc.

I use a Flexi 10m lead and only let him off in benign wildlife free areas (beaches etc)

We have one that seems to have lasted and has an app that tracks in real time. No idea of name but I'll find out tomorrow...

A vote for Tractive here - it roams across
networks and has great battery life.

The issue is if the deer crosses a road etc with the dog in pursuit regardless of what tracker you are using.
If you're up in the Highlands /top of the fells ie away from roads or anything that could harm a dog in full red mist mode and the dog takes off then you might not have GSM coverage hence why the Garmin satellite trackers are used in Finland.

Either keep him on a lead or train it recall to an Acme whistle

I'm just wanting to track her in the area she goes missing in..... Now don't laugh here folks.... My dog is no Karelian bear dog just a very prey driven Cockapoo.lol....... Im just wanting something to locate here to save the 30 minutes of heart attacks and a ear bashing from the wife when I get home. She is trained to the whistle but can be a tad stubborn when on a scent. The first time she went missing she turned up at home from about a mile away and the second I just sat around the last place I had visual on her and she returned 30 mins later.

We use Tractive.

It's a GPS-only device so works world-wide.

It's on all the time and the device pings the satellite every few minutes so you always know within a few minutes if your dog is on the move (you can set up Virtual fences which trigger an alarm if they go outside it).

It does live tracking as well but can take a few minutes to click over, depending on satellite coverage at the time. However it's super-accurate and works superbly well. The mobile app is good so you can use it whilst you're out an about (mobile coverage provided!)

Unfortunately last time I looked they weren't shipping to UK after Brexit.

Edit: looks like they've sorted the shipping issue. One other thing: the unit is fairly cheap but I think you pay for the GPS licence in 2-year blocks so it can be eye-wateringly expensive to begin with, however when you look at the equivalent monthly cost it's good value.

I know Vodaphone do a mobile-signal based tracker. Don't know what that's like.

We use Findster - it is pricey as a one-off cost so no monthly subscription, but seems to do lots of stuff. They are about to release a new subscription option that offers more as well, no idea on cost.

Parent's dog and the pair of them have the app installed on their phone and it gives a lot of data - uses GPS not a GSM connection, so seems to be a bit more reliable in areas that have poor phone reception - they don't tend to go for big walks in the woods though, but they do go for longer walks when away in the caravan and it has proved useful.

If you can't trust it to come back, it should be on a lead.

She is trained to the whistle but can be a tad stubborn when on a scent.

Sounds like more training is needed.

I just googled Karelian Bear Dogs. They don't look like bears. Oh, they're bred for killing bears 😬

Deery me.

Another vote for Tractive.

20% off code 'safiandnala' (my OH runs one of those dog instagram things)

No it's not.

GPS satellites don't work like that.

How does a Tractive GPS tracker work?
It connects to the best available mobile network - just like a phone - to provide location data everywhere your pet goes.

So it still requires a mobile signal to work. Although it seems that it can use any network. So should have better coverage.

My dad is happy with Tractive for his two farm dogs. Apparently it can be a bit slow to spot that the dogs have left the virtual boundary (he uses the house wifi network going out of range as the trigger) but easy to find out which field they're playing in via the app.

They did have some problems where alerts weren't being sent but he says there have been a number of firmware updates since then.

No - not for killing bears, they will harass a bear till it buggers off elsewhere. They are only the only dog brave/stupid/intelligent/fast enough to tackle bear without getting injured themselves. They are used in Yosemite Park for this original purpose rather than having to shoot persistent human bothering bears.
They are also used for hunting large prey but will corner without harming the prey and keep it there with a unique bark for different types of prey to alert their handler/hunter, otherwise they are silent and don't bark.

Met a few KBD’s when I lived in Finland, very much outdoor working dogs. Glad to hear there are some in the U.K.

Brother's Whippet vanished into Epping Forest several months back (ran off chasing a deer just as they were getting into the car). Still there surviving off rabbits and ducks, gone totally ferral. Impressive such a skinny dog coped with this winter, whcih was pretty cold.
