Thinking of going camping in N Devon for a few days this weekend. Was originally thinking of Croyde but I don't think dogs are allowed on the beach there.
Anyone know of any dog friendly beaches around there and possibly campsites that are close by? Or if dogs can go on a certain bit of Croyde beach...
Saunton Beach, just round the corner, is dog friendly.
If you head around the headland to Watermouth cove there is a really nice secluded beach called Broadsands. 200 odd steps down through woodland but imo one of the nicest beaches in the area. You can camp at Napps which gives easy access to the descent.
Hele around the corner is dog friendly too.
Cool cheers both, I'll look into those.
I came here to say Saunton too. It's always dog-heavy, seems to be a mecca for dog walkers. Just be aware the car park prices are on the high side. Last time I was down that way we went to Crow Point to walk my friend's dog and I think it was a couple of quid to park.
Saunton - plus its the best beach in the world... 2 or 3 miles long and a 5 minute walk away from the car park will get you past the hoards and in almost total peace and quiet. There are other car parks too - theres one at the end of the toll road at Crow Point and one about halfway along the back of the dunes too...

Well it would be if it weren't for the dogs.

I am a dog.
+ Woolacombe is equally as good as a beach if you want to deal with chav hoards instead of a few dogs.
The other end of Woolacombe .....
Nearer to Croyde, no more than 10mins in the car or a lovely walk around Baggy point ... Putsborough
Top top tip ..... Go to Milks Up (on the road to Georgeham, on the left).... for self service milk and milks shakes straight out of the end of the farm's dairy shed.... fantastic.
It was only recently I learned about Putsborough beach being used for bomber practice in WW2.
Another top tip,
Park at putsborough, walk towards woolacombe along the beach as far as the porthole cafe ( about 3/4 of the way to woolacombe)
stop for excellent coffee and lunch, https://www.theportholewoolacombe.co.uk
walk back along marine drive / bridleway to puts.
The small beaches to the right of Woolacombe main beach is dog friendly as is Woolacombe beach from the stream on the left all the way to Putsborough. All the shops pubs and restaurants in the area are dog friendly.
I was told recently parking at Puts has increased to twelve quid!
It can be! Saunton is just as bad tbh if you spend the day there least you can pay hourly though
Puts varies depending on the weather and what day it is (& what time you arrive)
Marine Drive is cheaper ( same beach just approached from woolie end )
Downemd and national trust croyde are probably the cheapest car parks but not so dog friendly this time of year.
if it helps I’m currently in Italy where it’s £25-30 / day parking!
Further to my post up there^^^.
I grew up in Braunton, and was back there for a week in July this year.
As mentioned above @51.0748656,-4.1923394,15.75z/data=!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x486c3ce36865894f:0xc3ca10a4ec434afd!2sCrow+Point+Car+Park!8m2!3d51.0746798!4d-4.18728!16s%2Fg%2F11hd1sbvw4!3m5!1s0x486c3ce36865894f:0xc3ca10a4ec434afd!8m2!3d51.0746798!4d-4.18728!16s%2Fg%2F11hd1sbvw4?authuser=0&entry=ttu">Crow Point is excellent, cheaper and a lot quieter than Saunton, and if you have the legs for it you can walk all they way along the (long) beach to Saunton. Take cash though if you are going for this option as the card machine on the Toll Road to Crow Point wasn't working when we were there.
Another option is to park at the @51.0903194,-4.2145321,15.25z/data=!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x486c3d252abe1697:0xc05099d029d1f95c!2sBraunton+Burrows!8m2!3d51.0780409!4d-4.1994956!16s%2Fg%2F11bc581gz5!3m5!1s0x486c3d27fc1d0b79:0x117d6224f271de79!8m2!3d51.0935844!4d-4.1959457!16s%2Fg%2F11hczf5brb?authuser=0&entry=ttu">Sandy Lane Car Park and walk across Braunton Burrows to Saunton Beach. Path network is a bit of maze. I spent many happy hours as a kid combing the Burrows for bits of WW2 militara left over from WW2 when the Americans used the area to train their troops for D Day. There are a few bits of infrastructure remaining.
All dog friendly.
We recently got back from staying in Braunton and had the same question which others have pretty much covered.
- Saunton Sands - dog friendly 2 mile stretch of sandy beach with some crazy dunes
- Croyde - beach is not dog friendly (until the off season) but you can take them out on the dunes/cliffs above. Check out Biffen's Kitchen for some banging grub (breakfast, Caribbean and Asian)
- Combe Martin - dog friendly cove
- Watermouth Bay - a very prehistoric-looking dog friendly cove secreted away at the foot of a twisty climb down from the coastal path
- Instow - dog friendly and very picturesque
- Westward Ho - not dog friendly on the sands but plenty of dog walking space and lots of touristy stuff to do if you've got kids
We went to Devon this year on holiday and I've never seen so much dog cr@p. I know it wasn't any of you, but it was somebodies dog, Appledore in particular was dreadful.
Watch out for car parks run by ParkingEye. We parked in the one at Croyde Bay and got a £60 fine, our offence, *8 minutes over the time. 8 minutes spent looking for a space, trying unsuccessfully to use the app, scrabbling around for coins and discovering the machine didn't like all of our coins!
I find it so weird you lot put up with nonsense like access to beaches being controlled.
Unleash the hound!
Lola let loose on a Scottish beach
Oscar on his way to Saunton
At the bottom of what used to be Flag Pole dune looking back towards Braunton?
Oscar looking in the direction of Saunton Sands Hotel? (but probably not visible from that spot.)
Frankie and his pack of humans doing some dune running on the way to Saunton
This more like it. Love the dog that took three steps down and decided it was stupid.
You need to watch to the end. He was giving them a head start.
I used to love the fact that you could stand on the dunes and you could see in the distance if it had snowed on Exmoor.

LOL. I only opened the thread because I couldn't make sense of the title.
I know it's rubbish that people can't take dogs on most beaches in summer. I suppose it's all the nob heads that clean their shit up or refuse to control their dogs, don't get me wrong mine has rubbish recall at the moment but we are trying....
Anyway, thanks for all the tips, we're staying at a campsite near to Watermouth bay which looks bloody gorgeous, and hopefully the steps keep the numbers down!
Will go to Saunton as well, cos the kids want some body boarding action.
I'll update the thread with some doggy action. 😯 not like that!

You must be alright here when the tide is out.
Just about my favourite place.

For body boarding its perfect - no rocks, perfect sand and usually some semi decent waves.
One other thing - the restaurant above the surf shop on the beach is pretty good. Dog friendly (as long as you sit on the terrace) and the food isn't too bad.

and the dog mess pales into insignificance compared to the crap humans leave behind on a daily basis.
