Anyone have any experience good or bad of checking their dog breed? We have adopted a staffy and the owner said she was crossed with another breed but we can't work out what breed she's mixed with. She looks like a long legged skinny version of a staffy but I was thinking of getting a DNA kit to settle the argument between me and Mrs yim. Amazon have one for 30 ish quid which is a small price to pay to prove I'm right!

I have been asked to get my dog DNA tested by my vet amongst others, but for some unknown reasons I'm rather skeptical of the accuracy of the tests. I did put some photos of him on the bull lurchers facebook page for others to try to identify him (a lady on there is very very good at identifying dogs parentage but even she couldn't agree on mine). Stick some piccies of your girl on here and we can have a good guess as to her origins.

Anyway, you know the law when it comes to dog posts, no pictures of said dog and your post gets deleted.......

They vary in their accuracy. Some of them have more breeds than others in their databases.

I would regard them as a bit of fun but not totally accurate

Not sure this will work but I don't have a clue on how to post photos since the update. My wife thinks part Jack Russell but I'm not so sure

She looks cool. Can see where the JRT suggestion comes from.

Here’s an article about the varied accuracy. It’s USA based but most of them are too.

She’s a beauty. Wouldn’t like to guess what she’s mixed with though.

Anyone got any idea what this is made of?

Fromthe fur on his back we've deduced that he's part German Shepherd or similar, as for the rest of him we haven't got a clue!

Edit: Aarrgghh!! Can't get the pic to show.

We got it done for our Staffy, think it cost about £50. Turns out she is crossed with an American Bull Terrier which is obvious when comparing them! A lot of money for a bit of a trivia and can't say if it was a good or bad experience but it doesn't change my view of her when she smashes into my legs for the umpteenth time when we're out walking

We had a DNA test done for our little chap

We just kept getting asked by people and it became very annoying especially when they would tell us we were wrong!

I used Wisdom Panel which seems to be the leading one. There are cheaper but I was concerned that cheaper might mean less accurate or less thorough testing.

The results were fairly interesting, he came back as a mixture of border terrier / JRT / misc terrier

We think he is a patterdale but that's not a "breed" as such so still didn't confirm that.

It's quite cool how it shows you the lineage back a few generations. Probably if you had a dog that was a more distinct mix or pedigree then that would tell you more. For us it ruled out several breeds too which was just as helpful.

So for curiosity's sake I'd say it was worth it

£30 for a DNA test, do they work on kids?

a_a,

could do with something to give scale but my starter for ten would be

- collie colour scheme

- ears from a greyhound/lurcher

- looks like you got the tail from a jack russell

- not sure about the shoulder/chest area - looks like greyhound again but there is something spaniel about the placement of the front legs, right out in the corner like that?

- looks like a good boy (/girl)  🙂

Agree with most of above. Collie/Bull Terrier/long dog of some type, ie a lurcher! Smashing looking hound!
