At present our 6year old likes to chew his sleeves whilst at school and when watching TV normally a lego man or something like that...

I put it down to its calming or anxiety school have called us in today and say it maybe a sensory issue, we should have him checked out with an OT, teacher totally disregarded that he doesn't do it all the time at home or for that matter not once during the summer holidays.

Teacher has only been teaching for 2 years and in my eyes not had enough experience yet of 6 year olds.

Something is making him anxious or he simply just likes doing it and its all normal in the realms of being six years old.

Anyone dealt with similar ?

My son did it - the cuffs on his school sweatshirts were in tatters.

My brother sucked his thumb until he was 7.

I wouldn't say either had turned out to be nervous adults and I'd just let him get on with it unless he has other symptoms of anxiety. My son said he only chewed his jumper when he was bored in class but best not to raise that with the teacher, it'll just look like you're trying to deflect it.

My 5yr old daughter is constantly bloody chewing something. Hair, clothes, teddy, some random bit of whatever she's just picked up off the floor!!

Don't think a sensory issue or anxiety, she just does it and will grow out of it reckon. At least she doesn't trip over stuff or bump into stuff any more than her brother or other kids do.

My youngest (also 6) sometimes does - not school clothes though. I was assuming it was just a normal thing some kids that age did and he'd grow out of it - don't think he has anxiety issues. Have pointed out to him that he's ruined one of his favourite tops, and he does seem to have mostly stopped now.

I did it.. My oldest has just grown out of a phase of it at 6, and his little bro has just started too

I've idly wondered if it's anything to do with coming from a smoking household (not that we've ever smoked inside the home with gay abandon)

I wouldn't be overly concerned about it, but may be investigating it further and what is an suitable alternative. Could he have something malleable that is kept in his pocket? Most children are less anxious at home because they are not experiencing the same level of demands at home. They probably won't even recognise or be able to express why it happens. If you want to discuss it further have a meeting with his teacher and have the SENCO present. Good luck, cheers 1 shed.

my oldest does it. he's 8.
if we're outside then he'll chew the top of the storm flap on his coat. at home its usually the cuffs f his sleeve or his collar.
last night he came into our bedroom and the top of his pj top was soaked!!
