Did the free upgrade to win 10 a while ago but for the past 6 weeks or so everytime we use the laptop it seems to want to apply a security update. These have been taking hours to do and its virtually everyday, i did try turning the update off but it seems microsoft second guessed me and switched it back on. Also the update seems to say whilst downloading that it cant be applied as its not the latest version of win 10 yet my windows has no update to do. So can i actually turn off the updates or am i perpetually stuck in updates?

Sounds like it has failed to install the latest version, possibly due to insufficient disk space. I would go to the Microsoft website and create a bootable USB stick with the latest version and install from that. Very simple to do if you Google it.

Update are about as regular and unintrusive as they've always been for me. Downloads quietly in the background and applies them when you next shutdown/startup, so sound's like you have a problem.

Turning off updates is a bad idea, you'll not get security patches and the like. Might even mean Windows Defender updates are cancelled, if you are using that. I'd try rolling it back to a restore point from 7+ weeks ago or reinstalling.

There have been a lot of updates recently, out of band (i.e. usually it's every second Tuesday of a month). The fixes for Meltdown / Spectre in particular.

But yes, could be they are failing. Go to 'View installed update history' and check the status.

Can't easily disable updates on Win 10 now (which is a good thing).

If you did the free upgrade, was that from a disc, and where did you get it? It could be the upgrade was an early version of Windows 10, in which case it needs to update to the Fall Creators Update at some point, but that's a major update.

The major updates are effectively new versions of Windows. With Windows 10, the major version number remains the same now, but after the Fall update, you're effectively on Windows 10.4 (or Windows 14). The major updates are a lot more frequent also.

The Fall update is rolled out gradually and can take some time to appear, or you can update via...

The update was originally done online via Microsoft official channels. The security update has popped up and downloaded everyday this week and it has just restarted the laptop (it has been on for 5 hours!). There is over 150gb of free disc space and always has been. I am not fussed about getting all the updates as this laptop is very rarely online as we just use it for Microsoft Office for writing docs. I will check out what you guys have advised tomorrow as wife is currently using it,thanks and keep the suggestions coming.

Edit: every single update it has done has failed according to the history. How do i find out more details about why it has failed?

With Windows 10, the major version number remains the same now, but after the Fall update, you're effectively on Windows 10.4 (or Windows 14).

If you type winver in the Run box it'll tell you what version you're running. Latest is 1709.

Funny, I read on Microsoft's site that Windows 10 isn't an operating system, it's a service. And the updates are to improve the service. Brilliant.
