Do you really need 5G right now? Coverage is patchy and does you need the speed it offers on a mobile? Reason I ask is, if you can live without it, just find which ever Sony Xperia compact fits your budget and ticks as many other boxes as possible.

New? Doubtful. Depending on your definition of ‘brilliant camera’. And do you want a certain battery capacity or a minimum screentime? If the latter maybe look at a Pixel 4a?

*edit - oops, just realised the 5G version is way over budget. As you were.

5g not essential but would be nice. All the things I want are easily available in a big phone. Prefer smaller.

They're available on small phones too just not for £250!

Have a look at the Samsung A51. Not 5g but I think ticks many of your boxes.

Pixel 4A? No 5G but meets your other requirements (physical SIM plus eSIM).

Why? There’s barely any 5G coverage outside of a few cities, and there are still plenty of places where 4G isn’t available yet! If my local experience of 4G rollout is anything to go by, don’t expect 5G of any significance for at least another five years, if not more, and don’t forget there are two different flavours of 5G, one is basically a higher-spec 4G, the other, mmWave, is line-of-sight, and will likely never be seen outside of major conurbations.
Honestly, it’s the last thing to consider, after camera and battery, and storage capacity.

The A51 mentioned above is available in both 4G and 5G flavours.
