Maybe it's a grumpy old man thing but the shortened 'Uni' really p***** me off.

The original Scottish Universities were established centuries ago and are steeped in tradition, their alumnii laid the foundations for education worldwide.

Whenever I hear some one harping on about Uni, I usually switch off.

I'd have said that the original English Unis laid more foundations earlier, but who knows....

😉

"Whenever I hear somene harping on about Uni, I usually switch off."

Because of the word used, or because it's no longer relevant to you?

The contraction doesn't bother me at all, and it's in common usage - far more common than saying "university" in informal conversation or writing.

I much prefer Poly or Tech, particularly when talking to recent graduates

There is a very good Indian takeaway called Mrs Unis in Edinburgh.

CFH, I think St Andrews may have been established before Oxbridge but who knows?

Nope, I work in one. It gets tiresome to real out the whole word when slipping it into a conversation (I still refer to work as "uni" rather than "work"). I can see your point though, maybe I should re-train myself.

Interestingly, from Wiki;

in South Africa it is sometimes called "varsity", which was also common usage in the UK in the 19th century.

Uni is very annoying but slightly more acceptable than 'Varsity

I went to a University (and it wasn't a Poly either)

My personal old man complaint is the misuse to the word Random.

I think you meant to say "misuse of the word random."

Maybe if you'd attended a Uni you would know how to use apostrophes.

Glasgow was 1451 IIRC and Edinburgh was 1582. All totally unimportant of course.

If the word "Uni" makes, and I quote, your "skin crawl", then lord knows what happens when you watch Peter Mandleson on tv!!!!

This really is a new low in rants I feel. In fact, it is such a poor rant it makes my skin crawl!

I doubt it, I've been at uni for 1/3 of my life and still rarely grasp apostrophes. However I do cope on words lile "Doesn't", I just choose to ignore their existence on here 🙂

Sadly, I spent 5 years at the Edinburgh College of Art. Graduated with a First, and did a Post Graduate Diploma. I never went to either graduation ceremony. Apostrophes were never a strong point.

The shortening of 'carpenter' to 'chippy' really pisses me off.

Whenever I hear someone harping on about chippies, I usually switch off.

No wait ................ it's the shortening of 'bricklayer' to 'bricky' which really pisses me off.

Whenever I hear someone harping on about brickies, I usually switch off.

Obviously 'chippy' isn't a shortening of 'carpenter' .......... D'oh - you can see that I never went to Uni :rolls eyes:

A lot to learn about economics you have my young apprentice. NVQ level 3 you already have, but it is the business force you lack.

University is a very long word, and uses up too many letters- and letters as you know are in dwindling supply, the great saudi alphabet wells will all dry up within 50 years.

Is "sparks" for electrician acceptable by "You what?" Guevara, then?

Or (in my trade) "Bloody Rep" for international business development manager ?

Does the 'word' Uni make my skin crawl???

Eh??

Did you mean...Does the word 'Uni' make my skin crawl?

Not that I'm pedantic or owt!!!!

Love the way people who 'rant' about the use of the English language struggle to use it correctly themselves!! 8)

The only thing about "Unis" is that most of them aren't!! 😉

I went to Liverpool Poly, but now it's called some University or other.

University of Central Lancashire??? It's Preston Poly ffs!!

Inverted snob...moi??? 😆
