Maybe it's a grumpy old man thing but the shortened 'Uni' really p***** me off.
The original Scottish Universities were established centuries ago and are steeped in tradition, their alumnii laid the foundations for education worldwide.
Whenever I hear some one harping on about Uni, I usually switch off.
do you find that you are one of the most in-demand party guests in your area?
I'd have said that the original English Unis laid more foundations earlier, but who knows....
😉
Do all abreviations upset you?
That's a piss poor rant.
"Whenever I hear somene harping on about Uni, I usually switch off."
Because of the word used, or because it's no longer relevant to you?
The contraction doesn't bother me at all, and it's in common usage - far more common than saying "university" in informal conversation or writing.
i think you need to chillax

I much prefer Poly or Tech, particularly when talking to recent graduates
There is a very good Indian takeaway called Mrs Unis in Edinburgh.
CFH, I think St Andrews may have been established before Oxbridge but who knows?
Nope, I work in one. It gets tiresome to real out the whole word when slipping it into a conversation (I still refer to work as "uni" rather than "work"). I can see your point though, maybe I should re-train myself.
Interestingly, from Wiki;
in South Africa it is sometimes called "varsity", which was also common usage in the UK in the 19th century.
Oxford Uni - 1167
Cambridge Uni - 1209
St Andrews Uni - 1410
no, but the word 'student' makes me violent
ggrrrr I'm angry now!!! who mentioned students!! bunch of idle ****ers
Abertay Uni - 1995

Uni Challenge? Doesnt really have the same ring to it!
CFH point taken.
Scuttles off in search of fire extinguisher.
Uni is very annoying but slightly more acceptable than 'Varsity
I went to a University (and it wasn't a Poly either)
My personal old man complaint is the misuse to the word Random.

I think you meant to say "misuse of the word random."

Maybe if you'd attended a Uni you would know how to use apostrophes.
Glasgow was 1451 IIRC and Edinburgh was 1582. All totally unimportant of course.
I went to a University (and it wasn't a Poly either)
Are you absolutely sure of that?
If the word "Uni" makes, and I quote, your "skin crawl", then lord knows what happens when you watch Peter Mandleson on tv!!!!
This really is a new low in rants I feel. In fact, it is such a poor rant it makes my skin crawl!
Maybe if you'd attended a Uni you would know how to use apostrophes.
I doubt it, I've been at uni for 1/3 of my life and still rarely grasp apostrophes. However I do cope on words lile "Doesn't", I just choose to ignore their existence on here 🙂
lile.....?
together, we can save this rant!!
Sadly, I spent 5 years at the Edinburgh College of Art. Graduated with a First, and did a Post Graduate Diploma. I never went to either graduation ceremony. Apostrophes were never a strong point.
bring back the Poly, is what I say.
(Tho' my first HE experience was at a Uni that was once a University College)

Yup of the ones still going Scottish ones appear way down the list of the earliest.
genuine lol at theflatboy's comment 😆
Yes it does because it means £20k of student debt I will have to pay.
alwyn, try shifting yer parenthetical so it reads:
Yes it does, because it means I will have to pay £20k of student debt.
Therealhoops, £20k of student debt has meant alwayn has made it to uni and now has the intelligence and wisdom of Yoda!!!!
Thanks Simon, make sense now it suddenly does.
I'm studying through the OU. I bet that abreviation makes your sh1t itch.
It could be worse. I went to uni, and I'm now convinced im one of the 1000 monkeys on 1000 typwriters, eventualy one of us will make an oil refinery.
The shortening of 'carpenter' to 'chippy' really pisses me off.
Whenever I hear someone harping on about chippies, I usually switch off.
Wasn't a Chippie a small Choppa? 😉
do you have any bits of wood that are smallish and greasy
alternatively does it take you a really long time to digest some takeaways
when people talk about chippies it makes me hungry
No wait ................ it's the shortening of 'bricklayer' to 'bricky' which really pisses me off.
Whenever I hear someone harping on about brickies, I usually switch off.
Obviously 'chippy' isn't a shortening of 'carpenter' .......... D'oh - you can see that I never went to Uni :rolls eyes:
I say that I go to school rather than university.
A lot to learn about economics you have my young apprentice. NVQ level 3 you already have, but it is the business force you lack.
University is a very long word, and uses up too many letters- and letters as you know are in dwindling supply, the great saudi alphabet wells will all dry up within 50 years.
I don't mind Uni, but for some reason 'quali' relating to F1 really niggles me.
I'd spell it "yooni" - as in "ra yooni"
I find people talking about 'Glasto' very annoying, in an upper-middle class uni way.
Oxford Uni - 1167

Northampton Uni - 1261

Is "sparks" for electrician acceptable by "You what?" Guevara, then?
Or (in my trade) "Bloody Rep" for international business development manager ?
😉
Is "sparks" for electrician acceptable .......
Makes my skin crawl 🙁
Does the 'word' Uni make my skin crawl???
Eh??
Did you mean...Does the word 'Uni' make my skin crawl?
Not that I'm pedantic or owt!!!!
Love the way people who 'rant' about the use of the English language struggle to use it correctly themselves!! 8)
The only thing about "Unis" is that most of them aren't!! 😉
I went to Liverpool Poly, but now it's called some University or other.
University of Central Lancashire??? It's Preston Poly ffs!!
Inverted snob...moi??? 😆
I'm finding all this intolerance is really making my life dull. 🙂
