No chance I'm going back to the gym with perpex screens, facemasks and constant cleaning (and no family swimming sessions! :-().

Should I get a TRX and dangle it from a tree? How boring is it? Has anyone tried a fake one?

Mick

You can just use gymnatics rings, about 1/4 the price and pretty much the same.

You can make loads of 'simple' BW exercises much harder and get more bang for your buck eg press ups into rings just off the ground will require much more shoulder stabilisation, so you get a much better workout for the same time as you would doing just pressups on the floor etc.

You can make it harder / easier by moving your feet further apart / closer together to make it harder to stay straight which will tax your core more. Then do pressups with hands on the floor but feet in rings....

Endless options.

Yep. I've got a fake one - seem to remember it was about £20 from eBay. It's only an adjustable length strap, so don't understand why they command such a premium.

It's surprinsgly difficult.
Plenty of YouTube videos if you're looking for workouts / exercises to do

They're good fun - get one you can use in your door jambs & your imagination is your only limit.

I've got a TRX that I bought half price from Sport Pursuit when they were selling them cheap. I really like it. Lots of different variants. One thing they have over gymnastic rings is comfortable foot-loops, so you can stick your feet in them and do pikes or whatever. They also score by have a slick, rapid length adjustment mechanism, which is useful as you find yourself needing different lengths of strap for different exercises.

I'd say the foam handles are also more comfortable than wooden rings too.

Should I get a TRX and dangle it from a tree? How boring is it?

Boringness is pretty subjective. I use it as well as free weights, but there's nothing intrinsically exciting about lifting various proportions of your bodyweight against gravity at different angles. There are loads of different variations / exercises so you can mix it up, but it's not mad fun.

What is neat is that you can stick it in a duffle bag / suitcase and take with you when you go away. The genuine TRX comes with a thing you can use to make a hotel door into an impromptu anchor, which is handy. No idea if that's the case with cheap ones or how they compare.

What you do behind closed doors is your own business.

Yep, love them. We (my old school I worked in) had a bit of a problem with body conscious boys wanting to use the gym a lot and not having the resources to man it properly in the evenings.

I went on a course and got a bit of paper that said I was a TRX trainers and rolled out TRX as a thing.

Re the cheap ones - I found a bunch of lidl cheapos in a school cupboard and tried them out. Whilst the genuine ones effectively do the same thing they are a significant step up in quality and much nicer to use. It's a bic biro/parker pen thing I guess - both are perfectly functional but one is a better experience.

My personal workout at home now involves a TRX, a set of kettle bells and a TRX rip. They are quite good too. But on a sunny day slinging the TRX in a bag and pedalling to my favourite tree with a view is hard to beat (for an exercise type thing - a bike ride/ sup/ mountain walk will always be better).

p.s. the whole door jammer anchor point stuff is emergency only whilst on the road imo. It is some much better with a proper overhead anchor point - currently using a £10 TRX ceiling anchor copy in the workshop.

I don't see me setting foot in a gym again, covid or no covid.

I had no idea what this thread was about so had to google 'TRX', some straps and handles!

Not sure I'd want to anchor any of this stuff to the doors in my house without sending the footage to you've been framed.

Yep, I have a cheap £12 copy off eBay, I'm sure TRX probably comes with instructions but really it's a slightly complicated set of tie-down straps and buckles, there's not much you could add value with!

The door jam works well, but only works (without damaging the door) in doors that open away from you! e.g. hotel bathroom doors where the door opens into the bathroom, the door from the corridor won't suffice. I've seen people use them with pull up bars for exercises where you want to put your feet in the loops.

I had that and some resistance band things and between them, you could get a half-decent circuit done without leaving your hotel room. Works best if you find a youtube video and just follow it for 30 minutes. Takes a few times to work out the lengths (some brightly coloured cloth tape helps). Doing a DIY routine gets dull pretty quickly.

i was heavily into TRX a few year ago and it's fanatastic. You can make it as dificult or as easy as you want. I bought one at start of lockdown and mounted it to my gargae ceiling and not used it yet but will be soon as i'm now a proper fatty and the TRX is great for strenghtening the core.
