after watching the 2 films about grandmaster yip man (wing chun master),i would like to start learning a form of chinese martial art.to be honest have wanted to for a very long time.
it's more than just wanting to learn self defence.i have issues (anger/depression/anxiety e.t.c) and feel that martial arts would help me in all those areas too (i don't mean hitting someone/i'm not a fighter anyway 😉
i just feel that this is something i need to do to find some inner peace (gods know i need some) also to start to learn who i am if that makes any sense?
i came across this martial arts school http://www.namyang.co.uk/martial-arts-clubs/marlborough-martial-arts-club.php nearest school to me is marlbrough/calne.
as i don't have a car,i will be cycling to the lessons,so it cannot be too far away (say 20 miles each way rough distance).
apologies for droning on and thanks in advance 🙂
p.s have done both shotokan karate in the past along with tae kwon do (although i didn't get very far/even though i enjoyed the lessons 😳
just found this school also http://www.kungfu-master.co.uk/default.htm
both these links sound promising 🙂
yes my hubby teaches it and has done for the past 20 odd years.... theres no-one better than him !!!! in wing chun alot of teachers claim to be the best (apart from yip man lol..... thing is tho these teachers vary their style greatly between other teachers so it can get very confusing... my hubby teches the wong shing leuung method... a proper fighting wing chun and also you learn the three forms of wing chun takes years to get perfect im not joking.....but you will learn the basics very quickly and effective....

Dunno about other martial arts, but Devizes Budo Club have long been one of the best in the country - maybe ask in there?
EDIT: Having re read your reasons, I would try Judo with them - I think it might be exactly what you are looking for. Good luck.
Good luck with the kung fu - it's a really great thing to train at. Most martial arts have their attractions but none are as cool as Kung Fu, let's face it.
I took two classes at opposite ends of the spectrum - a Wing Chun class that was pretty simple and total self-defence orientated. Good workout but nothing special beyond that - little mental engagement. The other was a v traditional White crane class taught by a Chinese guy that was superb. Not especially useful in terms of arse-kicking, but the physical and mental demands of the style were immense. Really satisfying to make progress with it (worth stating that these styles are very difficult - must be some of the hardest martial arts to learn), although it could be de-motivating going long stretches without feeling you were improving.
As hard as the Kung Fu was (the hard style), the Tai Chi class that the master also taught (the soft style) was even more difficult. So much harder to move correctly in slow motion.
thanks for the replies everyone 🙂
elaine anne unfortunately the schools you linked are too far away for me 🙁
brassneck i thought about judo/aikido in the past,but i have a weak lower back (it's a lame excuse i know 😳
will keep looking for other kung fu clubs around where i live, and check out the ones that i have linked too.
it will give me purpose/direction,that i feel i'm lacking big time in my life atm.definitely would like to take up tai chi someday also 🙂
The school of Ninjitsu is not in the phonebook.
This is your first test.
