Finally time to replace my beloved and much travelled old Animal bag, and am in a quandary!
Needs to be big. 120ish litre capacity.
Needs to roll easily. Too much time dragging around airports!
Needs to have decent internal strapping for suits.
Needs to be an easily spotted colour. Don't want anything too dull!
Needs to be as tough as old boots. My Animal bag has taken a hell of a beating over the ten+ years it's been with me! (The new Animal bags look awful, sadly.)
Options are as follows;
Dakine Split Roller

Nice, and a good bag, I know, but apart from the black all the colour options are dull or awful! Would really prefer not to have a black one. I know, I know. So sue me!
Or the Osprey Shuttle

Am a massive fan of Osprey kit, and company, and this looks ace. Not cheap, but ace.
Or, finally, the Evoc;

I don't really know enough about Evoc (hence the post!) but this looks pretty good.
So, anyone have any opinions on these? Or, have I missed something?
TIA for helping with my FWP!
I have the Split Roller and it is quite frankly a brilliant bit of kit: The separate internal pockets make organisation a doddle; not only for travelling but also for when you are there.
I did a lot of research before I bought it and I'm glad I did. It is also incredibly well made.
I have two evoc bags, one being their fancy dan bike bag and the other the fancy dan rucksack with helmet carrier thing. If that one up there is anything like my two, it'll be stupidly expensive and really REALLY badly put together. I can't stress enough how poor the quality of them is, especially the bike bag. My £80 crc one is ten times better made and designed. I won't be buying any more of their stuff. My osprey stuff in the other hand is awesome. Not flash but really well put together and thought out
Think of evoc as the crank brothers of the bag world...
I go with the Dakine as every Dakine bag I have is great build quality and has lasted forever.

I sort of knew this already, and if I'm honest, I'd love an excuse not to buy one that isn't just that I don't like the colours!

Thanks. So we're down to two! Unless, as above, I've missed any!
Got the evoc (and the bike bag) and unlike Flange I reckon they are great.
For suits might not be the best, still working a way to carry mine right but
Rolls effortlessly
Is light
Sturdy
There are extra pockets for dirty laundry, the internal dividers can be removed.
It's easily spotted

Did you have to unpick the stitching to get the end supports in Mike? Maybe mine was a duffer but it just seemed piss poor for what was an expensive bag. I also think putting the wheels on the outside is a bad idea, my crc one are with wheel bags the go inside. To be fair mine was carrying a disc brakes road bike but twice I've ended up with bent wheels and also had issues with bent rotors. Just seems a bit of a daft design
Nope, I remove the rotors every time. Wheels on the outside don't bother me. The wheels form an extra bit of support
It does about 20-30 planes a year and no issues (just back in the UK with it) it did heaps of trains and stations when I was back at Christmas.
Oh and I'd also send it back if I couldn't get the supports in.
I would have done but I was due to fly the next day. Piss poor planning and all that..
Well, so far, opinion on Evoc is mixed (at best!) and opinion of Dakine and Osprey is glowing.
Hmm. Choices.
CFH the only issue I have had is explaining the colour to the Indonesian driver who was picking up my luggage 🙂
The other opinion doesn't own the bag...
We've now got 2 Split Rollers. Possibly a bit large for 'general' luggage but I wanted something that I could get my biggest camera tripod in if required.
Probably the most robust bit of luggage we've bought was a Transpack boot bag. Quirky design but surprising how much you can get in them.
OGIO any good? Never used them myself but a lot of Mx guys use it. Some very colourful examples.
Well, the OP knows my view on this one. 😀
I've just had a look - there are quite a few other colours other than black available aren't there (just a google image search, mind). There's a grey that would make it an easy spot without looking silly. There's also a black but with bright blue zip details that would make it an easy spot.
We have two (both bought pre-Internet shopping being commonplace) and they've been best luggage purchase ever. But, yeah, the black is a bit boring. I'd rather have that though, than compromise for colour.
You can always get those really cool personalised luggage straps. 😀
I am a big EVOC fan. I have the bike bag which is head and shoulders above anything else I've used, a World Traveller wheely bag which is fantastic, and an FR Tour Team rucksack.
In my experience they are really well thought-out, well featured and well made. The World Traveller has very widely spaced wheels which give it great stability and it rolls very well. The flexibility with movable internal compartments is also nice. Mine is a boring black as I got a cracking deal on it, but it is a little anonymous and difficult to pick out on the luggage carousel.
I do also have a trusty Dakine Split Roller which has served me well and is still going strong after about 12 years, but if travelling alone I take the EVOC.
Cheers, Rich

😀 Hence the "boring" comment! 😀
The colour thing is, perhaps, just me being awkward! There is a bit of a practical element, though, born of experience....Too many flights where everyone was grabbing at the same black identi-kit Samsonite case! I'd just like something a bit more colourful. The blue zip version would be great if it was blue, with black zips, for example. The red of the Osprey and Evoc appeal for that reason alone. Sad, I know, but there you go!

That's almost as bad as having a hat on the parcel shelf...! 🙂
Well you can have the best one in black with mad blue zips. It'll say "I'm a bit mad behind it all...even if I look a bit boring". I guess that kind of thing might be important in the world of frequent flying. 😀 Or you can have something not quite so good in...
...reddy orangey 😡
😛
(You know which one you want...I won't ever take the piss about it...honest!)
Still going to go and look at the Osprey So, ner! 😀
Boring black option but cool name: Rolling Thunder!. Have seen smaller TNF wheelies and they're well built. I've a small carry-on size Osprey and it's decent, so would probably look at them first.

Nobody has ever tried to pick mine up 🙂
I have a split roller but I wouldn't buy another purely because of the amount of floor space it takes up when it's open. Not good in typical ski resort accommodation.
Mine has never looked like pic #1 above!
The EVOC looks great.
Hmm .. looking for a bag to replace my utterly crap Eagle Creek one that is falling to bits. Need to carry a big tripod so it needs to be pretty long. Split Roller may fill the bill. Do any Londonists know a good place to go look at these bags in the flesh?
Pretty sure there's a store locator on the DaKine website DrJ.
You could always go mad with some spray-paint on a boring black bag to make it a bit more obvious in baggage reclaim. Considering doing that with mine tbh
Cheers, Rich
Found that bits of colour insulation tape around the floor prop, a couple of different luggage tags and some ribbon have been more than enough for identifying our bags
DrJ
Probably not overly useful for flying with, but I can recommend the Manfrotto padded tripod cases.
Found this thread while i was researching similar. Ended up with the split roller as I found one for £100. I had a proper fondle of the osprey and the dakine, and I think I preferred the osprey. But not for an extra £50. Only thing I'd add is the Dakine is already 5kg empty. Not a big issue for me as 90% of the trips we do are in my mates T5 so weight isn't an issue. Might be if you're flying.
