No-one can bear?

You know, the one who somehow gets on everyone's wick & when you mention the name it brings on a case of rolling eyes & head shaking?

We have around 40 people who work for our dept & there's not one who can abide the person in question.

This person is a minibus driver who... can't drive a manual (gearbox) bus cos they have a wrist problem (drives a manual car), declared after being appointed the job that they can't travel in the rear as a passenger assistant cos they get motion sickness (every driver is expected to be able do do PA work when required), regularly comes up with reasons why they can't do a particular run (so someone else has to be swapped), finds a defect on any bus theyr'e appointed to, (the fitters in the workshop actually hide when this person turns up), 'borrows' equipment (wheelchair clamps etc) from various buses without asking which can cause major problems, has reported (grassed up more like) two staff members for not wearing a hi-viz jacket in a school car park The list is endless.

This person has now been appointed Unison H&S rep for the depot & recently went on a weeks course (peace & tranquility reigned), came back & is now H&S crazy. There's a 25ltr drum of pre-mixed screenwash (with 'screenwash' written on) in the building which now also has written on it in felt tip, 'dangerous substance (complete with skull & crossbones) do not drink! may cause death if ingested' I mean what would someone think it was? Blue Lucozade or something?

This person actually checked on the DVLA website a while ago to check that the bus they were assigned to was MOT tested. It wasn't listed as such so they refused to drive it. Cue all kinds of swapping buses till it was sorted, to which it transpired it was tested after all & consequently the person in question was told to do their job whilst the transport manager did his. It's a local authority bus FFS!

Anyway, sorry It's like war & peace....anyone got someone similar?

No but I've got a whole bunch of lazy colleagues at work, who don't properly check over their vehicles and are really careless with things like large vats of chemicals.

It's not like its the private sector where the drive for profits should overcome a little extra care.😋

They should throw dicks like that in jail.

Let the prison officers deal with them. That’s why they get paid the big bucks.

Not saying he isn't an annoying dick, but these bits make it sound like what you're supposed to do if public safety is involved.

I have 3 at my work.

One is like yours, will find any fault with any van he is given.

Another only looks after himself, won't do any extra work whatsoever and will take any opportunity whatsoever to play the race card to get what he wants.

The third one has no idea of personal space, doesn't know how to speak quietly whatsoever (while inside your personal space), grasses anyone up to the management for even trivial things (didn't put your hi-vis on the millisecond you open your van door? Fills in a Dangerous Occurrence card), has had 3 complaints about him bullying others, one racially (but not at guy no2), has been caught dragging runs out and even working without requisit PPE and had even been caught lying about an incident he reported to the police (he gave them the name of someone else who works for us instead of his own, no idea why!). When he walks into a room it generally clears, still thinks everyone likes him though.

We also have the usual group that are a waste of space but never get sacked and somehow survive redundancy rounds too. The type of people who you know would never get another job if they left.

If I didn't like the job I'd have left by now.

Everywhere I’ve worked there’s been one of those.

I think they actually are employed on purpose - see, they definitely have a uniting function with the rest of the “normal” people, who when they get together, can enjoy a good old bonding rant about the dickhead. We used to do this every lunchtime about “Captain America”, the guy who, amongst other traits, used to suck up to the US teams so much it made you vomit. We have “Billy big-bollocks” at my new place. Loves to talk really loud on the phone so everyone can hear how important he is.

They are everywhere.

I worked for a consultancy where one of the partners was loathed by all the partners and staff, he was an arrogant, dim bully.

I was his main techie on a new project, where the client had started the two biggest changes they'd ever had and then put them into 1 programme. I advised the partner that they had to choose which to do and it would take all the time and all the money, then went on holiday for 2 weeks. I came back to find he'd promised to do both changes quicker for less money. Six months later, big surprise, we were kicked out of the client.

He was given the boot from the consultancy with a >£1M payoff. Those at the top of the tree might hate each other but always make sure everyone in the club is looked after.

Nastiest person I've ever worked with, I was livid about the payoff initially, but life's too short to stress about such matters.

We have a guy who I feel bad for as he doesn't do anything wrong so to speak, he is just way too friendly and super nice all the time. Like annoyingly so, even asking someone how their day is going comes across wrong, he is so needy for conversation. He actually can't walk past someone without trying to start a conversation, no matter the location or circumstances. He seems to remember every detail of what he is told as well, so if you say to him you are on your way to a meeting for example on a Monday morning and cant stop to chat, then don't seem him again till weds the following week, the first thing he'll ask is how the meeting went. Who ****ing cares? He is just so full on jolly all day every day it drives everyone else mad.

Thats a big assumption. When I was self-employed I paid 40% tax and full NI on earnings.

Yeah were you sole trader though Jamj or director?... It's very common...set up a Ltd company employing yourself as a director so you get a salary and dividends. Typically the salary is set up very close to the personal tax threshold. Tax efficient as you pay less tax dividend income than on the salary. Heyho sun's shining so it's all good.

Yes

Lazy incompetent to the point of being a danger to my patients lies and plays the race card when disciplined for the above which coupled with weak management means she is still around but not for much longer as we have a new tough boss

I was the director and only full-time employee. I still managed to pay the same tax as I would under PAYE and my NI. I worked away from home so had accommodation and subsistence costs - that was the only business income that was not taxed.

The guy does sound like a nobber in general, however this bit is very sensible.

A previous employer was having secret financial issues and the Tax lapsed on my company car. I ended up with the fine as I was the driver.

Professional drivers are advised to check the status of the vehicles they drive, and not drive if they show as untaxed/uninsured/no MOT.

I wish I had thought to do this before I got stung.

the person in question was told to do their job whilst the transport manager did his

If the transport manager had actually been doing his Job properly in the first place.... he wouldn’t have needed one of his drivers to alert him to the problem of one of his fleet being incorrectly listed 👍

Who said it was a he?

When I say 'defect' I mean write out a defect sheet for ANYTHING. We all do our checks before each run but this one will find the slightest thing & seems to have a target of finding something on any of the 16 buses she could be driving. She must be costing the council a fortune & on more occasions than not she turns up at the workshop only to be told there's either nowt wrong or It'll wait till the bus goes in for service or monthly checks.

The buses all have rear heating as well as air con & recently she point blank refused to drive one of the buses cos the rear heating wasn't working, even though the front blowers are quite adequate on their own. (as I can testify cos I drove it all last week) Cue more work for office staff, re-arranging workloads etc.

PITA!

If the transport manager had actually been doing his Job properly in the first place…. he wouldn’t have needed one of his drivers to alert him to the problem of one of his fleet being incorrectly listed

The bus had been tested weeks earlier, it was DVLA that hadn't updated the info, & as long as the manager can show drivers the buses are tested then that's fine but she'd took it upon herself to nose around in the wrong place in the first instance instead of just asking the gaffer.

How much corporation tax or employers NI did you pay last year?

To the OP - sounds like she needs a hobby, why don't you take her out mountain biking?

The bus had been tested weeks earlier, it was DVLA that hadn’t updated the info,

The transport managers responsibility to make sure their fleet is properly updated on the DVLA database and MIDB etc so that their drivers aren’t stopped by ANPR cars.

and so that drivers are are able to check for themselves as they are advised to do by URTU and GMB unions

this person is a pain in the arse for sure, but that doesn’t stop her being correct in this instance 👍

I have one of those colleagues. We job share delivering prescription drugs to the elderly and infirm. He knows better than the pharmacist on all things pharmaceutical. He annoys all the ladies in the pharmacy by getting in the way and talking to everyone when they are very busy. He smells badly. We do about the same amount of deliveries but he takes twice as long and get loads of overtime. I rarely get to claim any. He really, really smells. We have to share the same van. He's reported me to head office for some really silly things, thankfully they ignore him. He gets the hump if I don't leave the van with the fan turned off, all the vents closed, the temp set to zero, the radio turned off and the clip board safely stowed in the back of the van. Admittedly he does leave the van tidy but thats only because he chucks all his rubbish out the window!

Smelly is bad enough, but I couldn't work with someone who chucks rubbish out the window without turning violent.

**** that for 2 reasons.

1) You haven't seen her have you? (she's not nicknamed 'The Wicked Witch of the West) for nothing.

2) She plays the cello.

It's probably me. Sighs.

Certainly now that a short NZ gent left a year ago and it transpired afterwards that almost the entire office hated him because he was arrogant, patronising, undermined people and would say unpleasant things about people in general meetings. No one apart from me said anything before he left - I refused to work with him. The only person who still thinks he's great is the MD.

They do sound like a nobber but as others have said I always check the tax/mot situation of any company vehicles I drive as saying "somebody else is meant to sort that out" isn't going to be much good when you're sat in the back of a police car!

Well that's a point made & I'll be asking our MIDAS trainer about it next week. Of all our 20 drivers I don't think anyone else has ever checked. (One driver is an ex cop & I'll ask him as well)

However I've not YET heard of a local authority minibus driver even being pulled for a tax/MOT issue before.

Always a 1st time I suppose.

Indeed. I had never heard of it happening to anyone at anywhere I’d ever worked in 30 years.

Until I was sat in the back of a police car, and it was me 🙁

We have one of them at our office. People actively delay their lunch break so they don't have to sit and listen to himself talking about how amazing he is for half an hour solid. I'll be careful what I say though as he has previous for starting grievances against other colleagues and reacts to any negativity like a sulky little child. He's off on two weeks sick at the moment because he had a verbal disciplinary, it's bliss for the rest of us.

I’m feeling really lucky. Don’t like my job much, but the people in my team are great and there are only five of them. My previous role in the company was an entirely different kettle of fish though.
