I need to do a few things on the car and some form of a jack is needed. I'm thinking either the one from Lidl or a simple one from a car shop. They're circe £35 with a couple of axle stands in the set. What do you reckon?
I can't afford a brand new Snap-On for $2k so it has to be cheap.

My Clarke one is fairly ancient and well used and still works fine. I'm pretty much of the opinion that if you're under the car, it should be on proper stands so the job of the jack is just to get it up and down, and for that you don't need much at all. But I know a lot of people do happily get under the car when it's on a jack, so I guess they'd want a better jack than I do 😉

I've had a Netto one for years with no problems, just make sure it can handle the lift. Axle stands are a must and chock the wheels.

I've used cheap jacks for years and they do the job. More recently I bought a bigger one similar to the MVP in the link above and its so much better. Lifts way higher, much less effort, moves more easily and is much more stable. The jack is just to to lift it up to prop it onto something more stable like axle stands so cheap ones work OK.

I have a cheap Aldi one...it does the job but its small metal wheels mean the jack doesn't move with the car very smoothly as you jack unless you are on nice smooth tarmac...it tends to jerk as the car shifts on its suspension. It also has a two part handle which is a bit faffy, and you have to put plenty of muscle into the handle to lift the car.

OK for occasional jobs...looks very similar to the silverline one in the above review, except its red and has two shorter handles.

Is a larger lift height better? Lidl's is 37cms whilst the shop's is 43, so 2" between them. My wife says it's a lot but... with a jack, what's the deal?

Lift is good when you just want an extra 20mm to get the axle stands on the next highest setting.

Get as much lift as possible. And use axle stands if you're under the car.

I've got two like the MVP ones but badged as SIP. Then again I'm a bit of an extremist when it comes to car maintenance 😆

Axel stands or pay to use a garage ramp.
