Having a odd debate in the classifieds which seems to be leading towards a request for me to gift the funds instead of money request...

Interestingly I can't locate a report function in the classified either, unless like the other options it's hidden

Can’t you just pay the extra to cover fees, or will the seller not accept that?

It was me setting the alarms off. Sorry. I hope I've not worried anyone else I've sold to.

I really do fail to understand why anyone would ask for, or pay by, paypal 'gift'. The fees are only 4% FFS and it's worth it either as a seller (just soak it up to give peace of mind) or a buyer (to pay the extra for peace of mind). You all can't be that skint that you're pinching a few quid here and there on stuff you don't need 😆

Not aimed at the posters in this thread, just a general rant.

whenever I sell I always quote for pricing to include all fees, and work that into what I am willing to accept.

I will then ask the buyer to consider PP Gift, on the basis of a long and verifiable posting history both on main and classified forums - but it's up to the buyer if they gift or not. Some do, some don't, the few quid extra it's made me over the years is welcome but I don't think any less of the buyer if they aren't OK with it.

Likewise when buying, if a seller requests gift and I don't know them well enough to accept, then I'll add the extra on so to cover the fees and get buyer protection.

It seems like it's the only sensible option really. If people are happy with risk then split the difference but never ask for it, you are after all strangers dealing with strangers.

Just to clarify, I didn't ask for PayPal gift.

Zero, hence the warnings (are they still there on the new classifieds?) Gift/friends/Family is exactly that it's a one way money transfer for people you know.

I always ask for pp fees on top, there is zero seller benefit to pp fees and actually more risk. If the buyer wants to use standard pp then not a problem but they can pay for it. I prefer it that way when buying as with regulars etc I don't mind doing pp gift but for the unknown will pay the fees.

Depends how much you're talking, if it's a £1000 bike then that's another £40 in fees. Depending on the seller I may be inclined to offer gift. In other cases Paypal offer no protection anyway so gift is the default option.

Completely the opposite of me! On a £20 purchase I'd happily gift, on 1k? Not a chance regardless of who the seller is, if i wouldn't send 40 extra I'd certainly not send 1k with no comeback. That's what cash in person is for.

Other than checking the users posting history (I've sold lots on here over the past year) or starting a thread called "Anyone been ripped off by XXXXXX?" there is no selling history. A rating system could be good but is potentially open to abuse.

Fwiw if you click a users name in the PM function the date given is related to the post. Not their reg date. So when you look at the poster and it says 3hrs old... then that’s why I started to get a little jumpy

My understanding is pp gift offers the seller no protection from a charge back by the buyer ( I seem to recall reading somewhere that selling via gift b/c it is a violation of PP T &C is itself a reason for a charge back or something similarly weird.

Is there any button to press to report the spam ads which seem to pop up regularly on the new classifieds? Another two in there this morning (apologies if it is a genuine STW user selling codeine and medical marijuana)

I keep suggesting it but it never seems to happen
Whenever anyone buys anything form the classifieds just reply with a post giving feedback on the seller, at least it's then in their history if people have a look back, we can just do that without having to set up any sort of official feedback system.
