Bought a network locked phone from cex, phone seems good but it’s clearly not locked to the network the listing said it is. I can see how they’d struggle, it seems impossible to tell what network it is locked to.
I’m sure they’d give me a refund, but to save more faffage could I just use one of those website that promise to unlock your phone for about £8? Or will they just take my money and sell my details to marketing agencies?
You are better off taking it down to your nearest Asian phone shop. They'll do it in five minutes for you.

FTFY 😉
I had a couple of unlock codes off ebay that arrived quickly and worked.
£8 seems a lot
Ok, cool, useful advice. Seems it is possible for it to work, just avoid overspending and avoid, er… casual racism.
Well this panned out rather well.
Initially doubtful, because the “well unlock anything” websites demanded to know which network it was locked to before taking my money. But also offered to take £2 to find out for me which network it was locked to. Risked them my £2 and found it was locked to EE (not o2 as I bought it advertised). So I headed to the EE website, entered the IMEI and thusly it was instantly unlocked for free.
I thought the days of phones being locked to a carrier were long gone. 🤷🏼

nearly. the practice was banned, thankfully, in December 2021.
