As above - if you need to pay for a defence lawyer in a criminal case is it possible to pay by credit card or are the people who brief them just not allowed to take credit cards?
Or will 'no win no fee' lawyers take criminal defence cases?
What have you got done for?
Yes to credit cards. No to the second question, Criminal and Family matters exempt from Conditional Fee Arrangements (no win no fee). Get some advice whatever it is and good luck.
One of the nmost toe-curlingly embarrassing moments of my life to date involved a lawyer who wanted paying in cash, and did not have any change.
🙂
Don't get a job, sit in the boozer all day and don't pay a penny towards the country and you can have a layer for free all day long.
Not that I'm bitter.!!!
Thanks midlifecrashes.
If Criminal and Family matters are exempt from Conditional Fee Arrangements and there is no Legal Aid any more, how are you supposed to defend yourself? Has access to a legal defence come down to how much cash you happen to have around?
I suppose the answer to that would be 'find someone who takes credit cards' and 'the public purse will reimburse you if and when you win'?
There is still Legal Aid, but basically you need to be skint and without a job to get, or a minor. There is a helpline for free on the Legal Aid site, and a talk with your local CAB would point you in the direction of which firms in your area have a contract/franchise with the Legal Aid. All good legal firms will have a quick chat and point you in the direction of where to get some good advice though, but fewer of the high street ones are doing criminal work these days. They don't like the way Legal Aid is done these days either. So yes, a lot of cases will rest on how much you are paid to pay up for defence work, and bullying people to settle against the facts goes on. It stinks.
Thanks again, midlifecrashes. Will look into what you have suggested.
