Birthday is coming up and I am mulling over the idea of replacing the ancient tablet I'm typing this on. It's done sterling service, in almost daily use for 7 years but battery life is suffering and the screen is cracked so it needs to be replaced. I won't bin it, it can go in the workshop for YouTube viewing when I'm tinkering and bodging.

I have considered another tablet, but I fancy a bigger screen and a keyboard, but don't think I need all the functionality (or expense) of a laptop when it will mostly be used for emails and web browsing with some light word processing.

So will a Chromebook work? I've never used one, but they seem to be ideally suited for my undemanding needs. Can I get a half decent one for around the £250 mark? Anything I need to look out for?

I think the point of Chromebook is to do with the storage of all your data from everything you do on it, in that the data while you retain actual ownership of it, Chromebook have full access rights, including scanning your emails, and can use that data to make money off of.

Or something like that.
As a device its probably not dissimilar to a laptop, except of course the privacy aspect as above. A bit like tassimo coffee machines are cheap, because the coffee pods are expensive. They want your data, and the best way to legally get it all is to have you buy their product and therefore sign up to their services.

Sounds paranoid ?, data information is the goal its where their income is generated, so I feel ive a right to be skeptical to their intentions.

If you already used Google products then you’ve already sold your soul and made peace with them having your info anyway.

If you want a laptop form factor and most of what you do is in a browser window then they can work well.

Mine sits gathering dust now because it’s a bit slow (I should have spent more of it) and an iPad is handier for sofa browsing & portability. If I want a bigger screen or keyboard etc I use a desktop.

If that's what you want to do then a Chromebook will work just fine.

As above, what you describe wanting it to do is pretty much what they are designed for op.👍

I think the point of Chromebook is ...

If you have a phone or use the internet you're already having your data harvested, I doubt a Chromebook adds much or anything to that.

I've had one a few years and use instead of a tablet. Years of barbering means that holding a phone or tablet and scrolling causes me pain.

It has quirks and niggles of compatibilty like all technology but its been very reliable and I will probably buy another when it dies.

Thanks folks. I already use the Chrome browser as well as Google mail, contacts, etc. on a phone and other devices. So the privacy concerns boat has long since sailed.

Seems like it might be a good option.

I bought a Asus Flip book for my technophobe wife and she has got on with it very well. Does most tasks. Not all Market apps work with it but I've been surprised how many will.

..... That's funny! As already said, the hardware being used makes absolutely zero difference!!

Chromebook have full access rights

You do know that "Chromebook" is just a hardware/OS platform in the same way that a Macbook is don't you?

Anyway, Chromebooks are great (now the #2 OS system in the world pushing Apple down to 3rd)
OP - yes, it will be perfect.
(and a lot of Android apps will now run on Chromebooks if you get the right one, so look into that if it might be of help to you)

We got one for web browsing and emails and it works great, has a long battery life and a quick start up.
I then had to start using it for working from home and found there were issues with the chrome versions of different add ins. The notable ones were that the licensed version of Team viewer wasn't supported at all for remote log in to another machine (we got round this with Chrome remote desktop). Also Teams for Chrome book is very glitchy especially if your sharing screens.

That said for what you want a Chrome book sounds spot on.

Do it

They are just like big android phones with a keyboard.

But pay a little more and get a 2 in 1 jobbie that are flippable and touch screen.

Good luck
