Is it just me (using iPad or iPhone) that cannot get DMs to work or is it broken across all platforms?
Whilst I’m having a moan...when you search for stuff has anyone else noticed it says the piece is recent and then when you open it up its often 5 years old or similar...
P.s. I did try searching to see if anyone else had asked this...
DMs do work for me, I think, as I have had replies but not always. The lack of any kind of notification on receiving a message, other than an icon change that can only be seen by opening a menu, means they are often ignored. This is on android chrome.
The search date has been messed up for a while. It has also messed up google searches which is very inconvenient as that used to be good.
As above. I found I had one once because I logged in on my laptop but from my phone I did not see any notification.
Have just sent you a DM as a test
Also just remembered, I think there is an issue if the user has a space in their user name. Can't recall what the work around was though.
As above, I think it does work but notifications aren’t obvious.
Work for me, also get email alert if I get a DM too
Ignore me , I'm a ludite.
Thanks Nick. Message received. It must have been the space in the name issue. Was trying to contact someone who responded to a post and asked me to contact him direct
I thought the @ function got broken.
I no longer get DM alerts.
And, as above, the Search is now worse than ever and the Google workaround is broken too.
This is what I don't understand; it's a limited IT team working on a tight budget but if you make a change and break something, why not backtrack and fix it rather than just cracking on?

Sounds like it. Sorry, I really can't remember the fix. I think it was to replace the space with some HTML code, obviously can't find the solution with the search either 🙂

If you go to Google and put "site: singletrackworld.com/forum" and then your search term after (you don't need the quotes) that will work. You can add another /topicname if you want to search in a specific thread or add a user name as the search term. eg.

should find your contributions here.
EDIT - no, looks like I don't get DM or @ notifications despite my account setting allowing them. ☹ I think I'll e-mail the tech blokes, that's poor functionality.

That's how it used to work and it was very good. Something has broken and that doesn't work nearly so well now. It partly works but it definitely misses results and you can't filter by recent posts like you used to be able to.
Afternoon,
Users can report bugs as per www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/our-forum/page/2/#post-11198346
it helps bring them to the attention of tech.
Sorry if things aren’t working right.

that's because no one is contacting you 😏 #billynostwmates
Had this issue myself not long ago. Checked my settings on here, a Mod kindly asked me to send them a PM in order to help and that went through fine. It turned out that the user whom I was PM'ing had an issue with his browser, after having checked their own settings.
IIRC you can work around spaces in usernames by putting a + where the space is. Going forward, the ability to have spaces in usernames is going away as it's causing untold issues.
Those griping about the search, have you tried it lately? It changed relatively recently. STW is evaluating better options but that's a few releases in the future yet.

As ever, it's not always that simple.
The old embedded Google search was bypassing the swear filter, which meant you could search for "*," "*," "*er *er" or "piers morgan" and it returned what you'd searched for uncensored. That's not something you'd want to roll back.
The swear filter isn't really fit for purpose, they're discussing alternatives.
they’re discussing alternatives
something mumsnet style
Interestingly the search WAS Google. It was literally Google embedded on a page that was limited to displaying results from the forum. It's a service Google offer with either a paid or free& ad supported version. The difference being the top 3 or 4 results were sponsored links, just like they are on Google. It wasn't without it's bugs though, as Cougar pointed out, but it was nothing we could fix as it was all a Google service.
The default search, which is what we have now, is simply the Wordpress built in search. It's very basic. What we are working on right now as I type this, and have been for few weeks, is a custom search function built from a system called Elastic Search. Techies may be familiar. To get it to work without grinding the entire forum to a crawl when a few dozen users decide to search through 10 million posts, it needs a completely separate (kind of like a copy of the entire Forum) database. We've been importing that copy for the last week. It's almost done now. It's not just a copy of 10 million posts. It's a database of 10 million posts with lots and lots of links and meta data indexing. Anyway, it's complicated enough to take that long to process.
When that's all imported in the next few days we'll be able to start building the search controls and interface. I'll have more news on when it will roll out in the next few days.
The old Google search is still there. Here's the direct link..

Elastic Search is incredible. We're dipping a toe into looking into using it at work for some Big Data frobbing where step one of our project is "deploy at least 14 virtual machines." There's none better that I'm aware of, it's a couple of decades-mature tech which will eat STW for breakfast.
I'm told the email notifications should now be fixed for PMs and @ replies. Can anyone confirm / deny please?

ive always just simply gone to ggogle and typed in 'singetrackworld pizza ovens' or whatever it is im after, and always been happy with the results. you get one or two main results then a link to 'more from singletrackworld' or somethings, and then all the results are from this site.
never felt the need for anything else, but itll be interesting to see how much better a dedicated search will be.
