I want to fix picket fence posts to the sides of recycled composite decking joists. The post can’t go far into the rocky ground. It will rest hard to the ground in a slight depression.
Would a pilot hole and single coach screw hold the post to a composite joist? Or would it require a carriage bolt and nut?
What are your fixing dimensions?
Can you use multiple points or 1 large one. Also, how permenant is this going to be. CT1 and big screws might work, depending on height, weight, length of picket and expected windage, kids kicking football at it etc
What is the core of the recycled material like that you are screwing into?
Some of the materials that I have seen, look great on the outside faces, but when you cut into them, the core is very fibreous and stranded.
Not sure how secure this would be to screw into.
Personally, I would drill through, nut and bolt with big washers or square plate to spread the load.
There will be a lot of force/leverage exerted by a post, even a shorter picket size post.
If your trying to avoid digging you'll want two fixings through the post to the composite beam . Ideally through bolted with washers.
Other wise your fence will fold over like a concertina
But really what your want is a post bar and rocks won't be an issue.
