I've got paint bubbling in the rain gutter in the roof of my van and I fancy trying to repair it myself.
I'll have this van until it dies, so doesn't do need to be visually perfect.

What alerted me to it was rust visible on the inside at the seems. Obviously water has been getting through.

I know this would be a tricky repair to do 100% due to this but surely stopping the water getting in will at the least slow the damage already done..

What should i go and buy at the motor factors to get the job done and so I don't look like a noob when I go down there 😂

I've got an angle grinder to grind away paint and rust but which attachment will I need and then what else? Rust neutraliser, filler, paint etc any specific brands recommend?

If you're not fussed on how it looks then something like por15 would be good.
Alternatively i've used BiltHamber stuff (Hydrate 80) to good effect. Then just find a paint to over. Your process is alright, depending on how much rust there is I would just wire brush off loose rust. Then just apply the hydrate 80, then some paint as a protective surface.

Grind rust out with knotted wire disc as much as possible, Fertan rust converter for any rust you missed, then zinc rich 2 part epoxy primer followed by epoxy top coat then paint colour of choice.

Do all that whilst wishing you'd bought a galvanized Ducato/Boxer/Delay

POR15 is crap - it's not UV stable and although it bonds well it doesn't flex like epoxy does so it lifts slightly if it's in a flexing automotive application (body panel etc) and water gets under. It then hides the rust that occurs underneath.

Where's the bit where you replace the rust with good metal......or as most people seem to think is a repair....Bondo

Oh no…….does the OP own a Transit??????

He's asking about a little spot on a roof, not an entire chassis

If he did the answer to get rid of the rust would be to scrap it and replace surely.....

Like spilling spot remover on your dog and him dissapearing.

Fertan on a transit leaves you with 4 tires and a steering wheel 🙂

I used Por15 to the letter on my van's chassis last year and I was massively disappointed to see rust bubbling through the top coat a few weeks ago.

The whole suite of treatment liquids cost me a bloody fortune

It's my trusty and only slightly rusty kangoo...

Odd that it's only happened in this one section of rain gutter near the back. Rest of the van is near perfect and it's 12 years old.

With this being the rain gutter I'll be wanting to keep the surface level with the rest of the area. What part of your above process would I put the filler in if needed?

To be fair non of the chassis treatments are a one shot deal

In this country it's a yearly thing. And I've still to see anything better at preservation than used engine oil.
