Has anyone built one?
We have a large square bay in the living room (about 3m ish long and .5 out). I need to replace the rad anyway and it seems a new one will be quite a bit smaller than the current 50s one (400x2400) for the same output.
So some more seating and some built in storage for toys would be great.
Does anyone have any tips on making it so the radiator functions as good as it can or pitfalls to avoid - I'm looking at radiator covers for design ideas.
Any decent resources to research - lots of pictures on pinterest, but I'd like some step by step approaches
I had a radiator moved from another wall to the bay in our living room last week and have been thinking about the same kind of thing. Hopefully get some good ideas!
I can only see it blocking/absorbing pretty much all the heat. Can't you move the rad if you're replacing it anyway?
Build a window seat and put the red on the front of it ?
no space to move it. bringing it forward a bit isn't a bad idea with a bit of an overlap so you don't get burnt legs like a big shelf.
but I would quite like to disguise it as they aren't the nicest of things to look at.
Maybe built it with a wide channel under the bench/box, which allows lots of air to go in at the bottom, and a wide gap at the back, which allows it to go up past the rad. Gap same length as rad plus a little, and maybe 15cm width.
Chances are the rad will be working at reduced efficiency though. TBH I think it's a bit moon on a stick to try the seat, storage and rad in the single space.
Build the box so the back panel is in front of the rad and a gap under to allow air flow. Extend the lid of the box to the wall with decorative holes towards the back (or all over?) to allow the heat to rise. Maybe add some sort of reflective surface to the back of the box to limit the heat transfer into the box/toys. If the lid is connected to the wall it might allow the rest of the box to be removable for maintenance?
You could always fit a trench rad under the floor at the front of the seat.
one house my folks had had a window seat over a rad. NO toy box tho. It did have vents at the back of the seat to allow air to convect from the radiator ( they should be called convectors not radiators - most of the heatcomes from convection not radiation)
Its always going to reduce the efficiency of the radiator
