I am going to respray this old 1958 roadster myself.
After rubbing down to bare metal there is some minor rust. Is this where Red Oxide paint comes in?

I was going to apply this, then primer and then top coat.
For the top coat I wanted to use Cellulose, but I'm struggling to find it. I just wanted a simple dark green or black. And I still have my compressor and paint gun.

I did consider powder coating, but the two mudguards and full chain case are quite thin. I had intended to just rub these down leaving the good paint in place as a base coat.

So am I right regards the Red Oxide. And any ideas as to where I can get cellulose?

Red Oxide is just a colour, used because it is cheap! You can put it into many different types of paint. People also like it because it hides rust marks. For best results you might want to give it a key with some rough paper like P80. Then you need to find a surface tolerant primer as above.

go with this, pay my wages http://www.hammerite.co.uk/products/red_oxide_primer.jsp

A quick google suggests you can't buy cellulose paints as a consumer anymore.

There will be other technology that should give you a good durable gloss finish. Automotive stuff would be where I'd look.

al, just the old steel painted guards and chain case are thin steel and might not like being taken down to bare metal?
