As above, is any type of rattle can paint (matt or satin black) better (i.e. tougher) than the rest?
Al, I've used aerosols of engine enamel in the past, possibly from Frost Restorations, the paint went on thick and resisted chipping well. Limited colour choice though.
Edit, engine enamel only comes in tins now, maybe this would work.

I have been told that the plasticote stuff is good for bike related bits and bobs, one of the guys I used to ride with stripped a poo brown pair of fox 36 forks and sprayed them in white plasticote. From memory he did 3 coats of white and 1 of Lacquer. They were not looking bad after a year and a half of use. Well no more so than any of the rest of our forks.
I did my fox forks with white plastikote. Looks ok but has noticeably yellowed compared with the white factory finish on my frame.

I used Plastikote on an old Trek frame. Went on nice & thick. Resisted chipping quite well. It's just pricey, at £5 a small can. If the frame is completely stripped to bare metal I could get it powdercoated matt black for free...
