I'm having a bit of trouble with the light fittings in my new house. They're single bulb pendants that dangle from the roof, and I'm trying to mount a lamp shade. Problem is, the pendant doesn't have a screw portion to hold a lampshade / ring so the only option appears to be to use the bulb to hold the lampshade on. It's a relatively new house and google seems to suggest that it's an energy-efficient bulb only pendant which may be the problem.

Fitting the lampshade ring between the bulb and pendant appears to work, and a quick google suggests that this is an acceptable variation. Perhaps in the USA? I've never seen it over here, and it seems wrong for the weight of the lampshade to be resting on the glass of the bulb.

Can anyone reassure me / tell me how I'm supposed to mount a lampshade to this damn thing?

Lampshades?…thats a bit posh aint it?..I've been in my house for 18yrs+ and i've never thought to waste money on reducing the amount of functional light by using lampshades

You're putting lampshades in your loft ? Now that's what I call proper posh.

Would a cable tie or 2 wrapped around the pendant cable help? That or swap the pendants out for new, they only cost a couple of £ each and a very easy DIY job - with the leccy off 😉

I've managed to fix it with a semi bodge. Too boring / arduous to explain but all sorted now. And now I have a beautiful lampshade blocking out light 😀

I've used these people for DIY light projects for over 20 years and their one-page catalogue hasn't changed at all during that time! They are only just getting round to sorting out a website! However there might be something here that can help you:
