An internal door in the house has been poorly fitted, it's been on its way for a while, but today I had to do something about it and take it down before it fell down!

Here's the damage:

The architrave was mounted in the wrong position too close to the door frame and when the hinges were screwed in they were directly where the architrave was bonded to the frame, hence the split.

Any thoughts on fixing this mess?

where there's no paint on the left of the door stops, that is where the door stops should be returned to.

That then will give space back to the hinges to be fitted correctly on the lining, not at the edge of the lining where the moulding is fixed to it.

Echo what Stoner said. Prise the stops off carefully. Re fit the door about 15mm further in (or enough so all the screws go into the frame properly) then refit the stops and architrave

A classic example of RAF joinery there. 😯

As above - move the stops.

What a mess. I would go and buy a new door casing and refit from scratch.

Ditto above comments.

Difficult to tell from the photos but the door stops look quite wide? If they're over 35mm wide it may pay to use thinner ones and get some more frame to play with.

Might also be worth checking where the hinges are. The classic rule of thumb is 6" down from the door jamb to the top of the top hinge and 9" up to the bottom of the bottom hinge.*

If you've got to move the hinges, you may as well get them in the right place.

* = a point that may garner some debate 😉

looks like the casing is too narrow for the wall, hence the line of filler between the casing and the architrave, and the hinges have been badly fitted, as well as screwed into the filler.
personally wouldn't bother repairing, just get a casing as wide as the door, and new archs.
