I occasionally have to talk to my managing director. Each and every time, it winds me up so much that I end up coming off the call in a horrid state of mind. MD not being intentionally nasty, in fact is usually perfectly pleasant, but my reaction is always the same, a sort of bubbling head of steam in my head. The real problem I have is not being able to clear this feeling, not knowing any techniques for releasing the steam and returning to normal.

So wondering if anyone had any suggestions of methods of how to deal with the situation. I'm thinking CBT, but no real idea if that is the right route to look into or not. Issue isn't really that bad to think I in external pro help, and thinking there must be some DIY resource out there that I could at least start with.

Is it criticism from the MD or the stress of speaking to your big boss? The tasks he gives you? Timelines? Pressure to agree on the spot to things?

Some form of meditation would be a good start. 'Headspace' app is pretty good.

You might want to consider your local self-referral CBT service usually run by the NHS. They are called different things in different areas but nationally are called IAPT. You can usually find find them on Google but if not your GP will know - we even advertise ours on the back of buses! There is a 6 week waiting target - most of our patients are seen much quicker. Most services are seeing people on video calls now for obvious reasons but many people like this. Some also have online CBT services eg Silvercloud which you can do at your own pace whenever. It’s really effective for the things you are describing and they are targeted at very mild to moderate issues and unlike most NHS a services they are trying to increase access and welcome referrals as it’s really effective and keeps people at work.

No, its not a criticism. It's my reaction.

The meditation idea would be good. At times I've used going out for a run/walk/cycle etc to dislodge the feelings. But sometimes it's hard to find the motivation to do anything once the mood has set in.

Ah, good to hear that CBT sounds like the right tool for the job. Gives me something to look for. Cheers.

Try a read of the Steve Peters book the Chimp Paradox.
There were a few useful things in there that really helped me deal with dreaded meetings / tricky people.

He's the guy who helped Ronnie O'Sullivan stop getting so freaked out during matches that he hid under a towel...

It's very clear and approachable.
