I've just got a new IKEA desk. For some reason, the desktop sits about 2-3mm above one of the big metal struts that you'd think would be supporting it, and I feel like this is causing the desktop to vibrate a bit when I play music (my speakers sit on the desk).

So I want to wedge a few small rubbery things in the gap to make it a bit more solid and reduce vibration. I was thinking something like these?

https://www.diy.com/departments/vitrex-wd250-plastic-5mm-tile-wedges-pack-of-250/5011204615834_BQ.prd

But they're plastic rather than rubber, so might work their way free? What would you use?

Some thick rubber washers might work well.

Isn't this what beer mats are for?

HTH 🙂

And stick your speakers down with blu-tack - that's where the vibration may be coming from.

How about a few felt 'stickers' - often sold for under furniture or other items that may scratch a surface. Cheap as chips and you can stack a couple if not 'tall' enough. I've had a 'sheet' of them for a few years, and always find a use for one or two.

How about actual rubber? AKA pencil eraser. Cheap, readily available and easy to cut to correct thickness.

Being as this is a mountain bike forum, i'm going to say my go to for small amounts of rubber tends to be old inner tubes

Thanks for the suggestions! I might have some felt pads somewhere, but I'll probably try a couple of these ideas.

I do have my speakers on stands that decouple them from the desk - a bit - although I am probably going to try beefing that up a bit too - maybe some acoustic foam, or if it comes to it, some of those ISOacoustics jobbies.

But I'm starting with the cheap stuff!

Maybe stick the two elements together with something that will damp vibration in both. Look up 'toffee tape' or 'snot tape' on ebay or amazon - a sort of gooey double sided adhesive that never sets (think a bit like the sticky blob that would hold free stuff on the front of magazines.

The sound damping sheets that folk use for camper conversions would work too - a square of that on the underside of the desk maybe. Vanlifers go mad seamlessly coating the the inside of the van in a glorious vain waste of time on money -  but all thats needed is a patch of it on each panel and it just helps stop that panel from resonating

maybe some acoustic foam

Make sure you have it facing down. If facing up it will send the vibrations back into the speakers and shake them to bits.
