Anyone done it? Experiences?

Tempted to do it as I dislike iPhoto, mostly because I can't easily share the library between computers. It also seems clunky and bloated for my needs. I do however like the Photostream integration with iOS devices.

I have loads of space on my Google Drive (it's a paid for sub). I've used Picassa a bit but dislike the way Google keep trying to force me into Google+.

So is it a pain? Will I regret it?

Use GD at work and find it pretty awesome - the only thing it wont do is automate the moviing of photo's from phone to drive, you'll need to do this manually and on an iphone its a right pain

Why not dropbox? Automatic upload across various devices.

Isn't there going to be auto syncing of all photos soon into icloud ?
Recently saw a beta thing pop up so was thinking (hoping) they have finally cottoned on

You can get all the photos you take to automatically upload to Google Drive via an IFTTT app and select the recipe for either android or iOS. I also use it to automatically put all email attachments in the drive as well.

Why does anyone use an iDevice for anything?

Hateful things - not least for anything music related. Thankfully I've never had the misery of trying to do anything photo related on one.

Because I already have loads of paid for Google Drive storage not being used.

Believe that is the plan and that iPhoto is on the way out.

Hmm now that is interesting. If the G+ thing doesn't work I'll have a look into that.

The G+ app has done this for ages. Works well on iOS and Android.

Hmm ok, have moved all my photos to Google Drive. So nothing in the Photos tab when I look in Google+. So assume to get them into Google+ you need to specifically upload them as photos? I think I'd just rather have them as they are in Google Drive.

One consequence though I guess is that the Google+ photo sync thing won't work as I'd like it to. May need to have a look at IFTTT.

you can then 'publish' (share?) a drive stored photo in G+. The storage is somewhat unified.. G+ lies down on top of it (Drive/docs)..

For an Android phone -- If you do the sync/backup option in g+ all your photos are copied (Slurped!) to a hidden (from others) folder, visible in G+. I'm not sure if/how you may access it directly in drive.

NB Your cat photos are not hidden from the Google of course!

For your non-phone you could just set up drive on your laptop etc. and let it sync dropbox style - and place your trust in Google. Remember though that screw ups get sync'd as well. A Backup may be a better strategy ->

For desktop/laptop/server -- Or better still look at using cloudberry or the free one for a beltnbraces 3-2-1 regime for your photos/vids.. Makes sense possibly if you have paid space at Google already. Crucially (to me) you can encrypt with this choice - and also send a backup backup to another provider.. This may seem over the top of course 🙂

EDIT: at https://plus.google.com/settings there is a check box that says "Show Drive photos and videos in your photo library."

Well tried the IFTTT recipe for syncing iOS camera photos to Google Drive. Seems to work well. Take a photo and it pops into a directory on Drive.

Also just being a drive on the Mac it still gets backed up via TimeMachine and Arq as well.

And at least we can easily view/edit/print all photos on other devices and computers which, most importantly, pleases Mrs Blobby!

In what way, exactly? I never have any problems at all with any music on my Mac, my two iPods, or my three iPhones, it all works perfectly.
And I've yet to find any convincing evidence that there's any difference sound-wise between an iDevice and any other music player that can't be put down to source material and phones.
And the reason I would have an iDevice is because of fifteen years using Apple computers, owning two myself, and getting my first iPhone after a shitty Nokia N95 and before any copycat Android machines showed up.
Don't forget, Android was specifically targeted at the Blackberry market, until the iPhone was announced, then magically it turned into a clone of iOS.
Why settle for a second-rate knock-off having used the original?

Because things change over time, what may have once been a second rate knock off may now provide a better device, of course you have decided based on a Nokia N95 that there is no better phone than an iPhone.....
