As in the title really, ideally with the same functions as my sky box and recording to an external HDD but without costing fortunes!
Also, is there any way I can get recorded programs off my Sky box (I have an HDD dock) or is it all encrypted by Murdoch's Minions?

All advice gratefully received 🙂

All I would say is don't buy the cheapest ones. We made that mistake with FreeSat and for the sake of £20-£30 I think we'd have got a much better box. If you've ditched Sky you could use some of that saving on an Apple TV (if you have other Apple kit) or Chromecast. Great for online video / movie content and RedBull TV for example

Ditched Sky a while ago and bought a Humax Feesat box and subscribe to NOW TV entertainment via my Apple TV, means I can record normal freessat channels BBC etc.. on the Humax and have On demand functions but can also watch Sky one, Atlantic, Discovery, Fox etc.. via NOW TV For £6.99 per month with no annual subscriptions, work perfectly for me.

I'm a bit of a TV luddite, mostly it's just kids programs that are on so just the basic Freesat channels will do. Are humax a fairly safe bet then? Can you record one channel and watch another?

Murf - Just about to replace our Humax Freesat one (wangled a daft deal with BT) and it's been excellent. Twin tuner, so yes - record one, watch another, full HD, 500gb(I think) hard drive and it's certainly lived up to its good reviews. If you're interested in it, drop me a line - won't be looking for much for it. /end hijack 🙂

Murf if GTTH is selling a Foxsat HDR I'd go for it. We have one and I really like it.
There's a custom firmware you can (easily) install that adds more features such as DNLA server and control via wifi (if you connect it to your network).
The only things I'd recommend are a programmable remote (we use Logitech Harmony) that would allow you to map the Guide button to Schedule + Red as this loads the EPG from cache which is much quicker than the normal guide.
Also removing the 'film' from in front of the remote sensor makes it perform much better.
Other than that, great boxes.
