Dislocated my shoulder trying to be sensible

Ffs. Went to Dyfi Bike Park since Hardline wasn’t on today. Had a great time, rode a new to me line, Muddy Berms or something. Great fun. Until a sort of double drop thing with some very slippery woodwork in there, so I thought I’d be sensible and walk down it. Because I have things to do, like bikes to test, and Ard Rock to go to. Slipped, twisted my right arm out behind me, textbook dislocation. Long and uncomfortable walk down some gnarly drops with my arm dangling from my side, followed by a trip in an ambulance with my arm propped out like a wing. Couldn’t get it close in to my body for a sling etc, just excruciating. It’s back in now, sling for 2 weeks minimum. Gah.

Dangly arm

what’s the lesson to be learned here? Don’t try and be sensible? Ffs.

Three words of advice: Do your physio.

I really wouldn't advise that

Argh! I can’t diagnose that arm, but I can read that face. That is an angry sad face. Give it a good nights sleep and a good breakfast, it’ll be better im sure. Can’t guarantee that’ll work for the arm.

Take care not to get an injury from wearing a sling., My last dislocation was back to normal fairly quick but the sling caused neck problems for far longer

Ouch. I've done both mine so you have my full comiserations.

Once on a Polaris challenge in deepest Wales but it rolled back in after an hour.

Once on black ice covered boardwalk in Grizedale. That was 11 hours before Barrow hospital finally knocked me out to get it back in. The nice side to that story is another stwer was at the hospital (broke his hip on ice elsewhere in the forest) and his partner put my Mrs up for the night and we are now all good friends 🙂

Best advice I can give is to get a physio and then make sure you keep it gently mobile following their advice. I protected mine too much and it froze up causing many more problems. Best early days thing the physio showed me was using a gym ball on a table to support the forearm whilst gently rolling it around to move the joint.

Hurts doesn't it! Bad luck but then sometimes it's actually safer to ride the obstacle than shuffle down it.

Take care not to get an injury from wearing a sling., My last dislocation was back to normal fairly quick but the sling caused neck problems for far longer

Blew mine out the socket in my accident, it now pops out if I get lazy on the exercises. The first time it re-dislocated they gave me a sling and it froze up, had massive spinal pain due to it for weeks. Never been near a sling since when it pops and never had any trouble since, a day or two's rest and it's all fine again.

I did mine last year, 5 weeks before a family trip to Morzine. It took 2 a&e doctors and a shed load of gas and air to get it back in.

The whole brushing teeth and wiping yer bum with the wrong arm is tiring and horrible.

The private (expensive!) physio and acupuncture was worth it though. Couldn’t sleep on my bad side but could ride a bike and it all felt stable.

It’s a shitty injury and you have my utter sympathy but things get better quicker than you expect if you’re careful. If you’re doing your physio try not to take all your weight through your bad side 😉

Ha! That's what husbands are for; in sickness and in health, after all.

Hope it heals up soon, and is less hurty ASAP.

Ouch. I've stepped off the bike a few times myself to avoid risky stuff, only to fall down immediately or soon after because the grip of my shoes was rubbish.

Ouch! Is there likely to be any rotator cuff damage or anything? Fingers crossed all is well after a couple of weeks.👍

ouch you have my sympathy ... and as other have said physio - I didn't get physio for a couple of years after which retrospectively was a bad thing and its never going to be completely right.

One thing set me back was reflex actions once it was good enough to use and not hurting the entire time and it kept popping back out partially. Although it got easier to put back it didn't do it any good long term.

Lots of these but one example stands out in my memory is someone threw my keys to me and by reflex I caught them ... I think I realised as my arm shot up but it was too late. I also reached for a full kettle or similar a few times... such a mundane thing but something I guess I do more by reflex

Yikes! That is unlucky.

Have had similar moments of “I’ll walk that tricky bit” only to slide around and fall over and wish I’d just ridden it.

Well done on the self-rescue.

All the best for a good and swift recovery.

Wiping shouldn’t be a problem should it? You’ve another arm. Time for it to earn its keep. Try getting by with a broken collar bike and 2 broken radii. That was tricky.

Physiotherapy and effective drugs are the route to a good outcome.

Sorry to hear that you’ve injured yourself, and I hope you recover quickly.

Those drops on Lower DH are lethal to walk down in pretty much all conditions TBH.

Oh no, hope it all goes well and you aren't in too much pain

I'm a week into nursing a battered and bruised Kevin who dislocated and fractured his on our last day in the Alps.

Not the best way of ending an amazing holiday.

Hard part for me was watching it happen, getting two bikes and two rugsacks from the top of the mountain and having the long drive home having never driven the van before

Ooouch.

I dislocated my right shoulder doing something equally (perhaps even more) benign 10 days before Christmas. It turned out I was super lucky - first time dislocation - I did chip my humeral head though.

The worst bit for me was management of the skin on account of not being able to move my arm in the sling. Sudocream (cat) was my friend.

I was axe throwing on the 24th December(!) although I cannot recommend this.

As Steve mentioned ^^ do watch out for the reflex “thing”. After I was out of my sling I instinctively tried to catch one of our dogs jumping off the sofa. The instant wave of sickness washing over me told me this was a bad thing. When I started physio a couple of weeks later the physio opened with that!

I did find that I do quite like penthrox but nowhere near enough to want to do anything requiring ever again.

Ouch!!

I still remember getting my partner to walk to the ski lift for a lift down after she fell off her bike at Les Deux Alp.

Get well soon.

Dyfi gave me that penthrox, I reckon it made one notch of difference on the pain scale. Husband maintains that morphine was very effective on me, I disagree. It just makes me chatty and I can’t feel my legs while still in loads of pain, maybe just two or three notches lower. Whatever they gave me for the relocation was good though, because I can’t remember that happening at all.

Not especially sore now, just frustrated and annoyed. Thanks due to Ride Drink Pie riders who rescued us from wales and got us home!

Ouch to all these.
I dislocated my left shoulder twice during a race.

The French doctor did some X-rays and said wear this expensive sling for 6 weeks, which was a bit of a blow.

Got back to the UK, more X-rays and told to remove the sling and use the arm as much as possible.

I carried on riding, was only caught out lifting the bike over a gate.

Worked hard with the theraband exercises (however it’s spelled) and it healed well.

I imagine less of an issue in my case due to easy (ish) relocation. The pain was something else though. Not as bad as trying to walk with a broken pelvis, but close.

@stwhannah - I found dislocation pain eases relatively quickly after a few days. It’s just whether you’ve done any further damage or not. Get some physio as soon as you’re able and do everything they suggest. In the meantime just take painkillers and anti inflammatories and rest up.

I know the feature you’re talking about on muddy berms - I sketchily rode down there but my mate climbed down carrying his bike - he almost ended up lying in the net to one side. Looked awkward to climb down!

Look on the bright side, at least you can legitimately say "Yeah, been to Hard-line, bust myself on the course"

No one needs to know the detail, right?

Ouch. Trying to be sensible; it never works. Think of all the things you (and the rest of us) have done on a bike, as an alleged grown up - how many of them were sensible? 😀

Maybe to solve one problem you could install a bidet and then see how differently you and Mr H pronounce it.

I hope you feel better soon and heal quickly. Pain is not fun. Well, maybe for some, but that's for another thread.
