Another old thread of stuff - http://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/hip-hop-you-dont-stop
Not heard the Dilated People's in a while...
Nas Illmatic is of a similar vain.
Mf Doom
Viktor Vaughn
GZA
Abdominal
Madvillian
Roots Manuva
UD, Format and J5 already mentioned. On top of those I'd recommend Blackalicious, early De La Soul, Aesop Rock, Giant Panda, Language Arts Crew and Cunning Linguists. If you like rap with a positive or political message try B Dolan, Poor Righteous Teachers, Brother Ali and The Coup. There is some really good Hip Hop out there. What passes for it in the mainstream makes me sad.
Some other great recommendations above. Really hope you find something to satisfy your ears
Since good calls above
I'd like to add
Aesop rock
N.A.S.A.
Handsome Boy Modelling School
Aim
Run the Jewels.
Aesop Rock... Inexplicable side project the Uncluded with Kimya Dawson from the Moldy Peaches, I can't get enough of this stuff
Hora, welcome to mine, Rich's and James' world.
Dangermouse
Awon
Akua Naru
Aesop Rock... Inexplicable side project the Uncluded with Kimya Dawson from the Moldy Peaches, I can't get enough of this stuff
Have everything by him! The Uncluded album is delicious!
My fave single of last year:
I ain't jokin
Dr Octogan
Also, sage Francis, Kate tempest, dab la sac vs scroobius pip and abdominal.
Oddisee, Bishop Nehru, Damu the Fudgemunk, maybe check out King Underground website. A UK label with good artists on the roster.
I'd also highly recommend Sadat X, from Brand Nubian and also Kool Keith (but he's probably an acquired taste).
DJ Format and mc abdominal are touring the UK as we speak
Some great suggestions above. Also look up:
Quannum projects
Binary star
Cannibal Ox
Atoms Family
Kool Keith (as above, definitely an acquired taste!)
Dead Prez
Atmosphere
J-Live
DJ Format is from Chandlers Ford . True fact.
Some great ones referenced above, I'm impressed !
From that 2000 ish era my favourite was Quasimoto ,The Unseen , the alter ego of madlib
I'd add in the Menagerie, cut chemist, dj nu mark, professor elemental (more chap hop these days, but that might float your boat), dr syntax. More recently, rizzle kicks isn't far off the sound, and some other similarish themes might have you liking imperial leasure
Tonetta

The Goats
Blackalicious
