Jurassic 5 are difficult to beat IMHO. The Roots. Revisit some old Tribe called quest.

UD, Format and J5 already mentioned. On top of those I'd recommend Blackalicious, early De La Soul, Aesop Rock, Giant Panda, Language Arts Crew and Cunning Linguists. If you like rap with a positive or political message try B Dolan, Poor Righteous Teachers, Brother Ali and The Coup. There is some really good Hip Hop out there. What passes for it in the mainstream makes me sad.

Some other great recommendations above. Really hope you find something to satisfy your ears

Oddisee, Bishop Nehru, Damu the Fudgemunk, maybe check out King Underground website. A UK label with good artists on the roster.
I'd also highly recommend Sadat X, from Brand Nubian and also Kool Keith (but he's probably an acquired taste).

I'd add in the Menagerie, cut chemist, dj nu mark, professor elemental (more chap hop these days, but that might float your boat), dr syntax. More recently, rizzle kicks isn't far off the sound, and some other similarish themes might have you liking imperial leasure
