Hi I am in need of a digital pen that I can use with my work iPad. Unfortunately it is a 5th generation iPad that does not support an Apple pen, nor the Logitech crayon which is the only alternative that I have been able to find with consistently good reviews. I just need to be able to write finely and legibly using things like OneNote.

Does anyone have any advice please, I’m hoping that perhaps something suitable has come out since a similar thread was active a few months ago.

I suspect the best option is a refurbished sixth generation iPad...

Thanks, I fear there may be no suitable digital pen. Work are not going to provide a new iPad unfortunately.

You won’t get anything that performs for fine detail like an Apple Pencil as half of the system is in the screen so tablets without that kind of screen won’t get that accuracy whatever pen you use

For writing only (rather than something like drawing / painting where the stylus has pressure sensing stuff going on) just try any simple cheap stylus - a more accurate version of your finger basically. If it works well enough the write then you’re all good.

something that works well with any pen  on a tablet is sticking on a mat screen protector - gives a bit more friction and makes writing a bit more controllable and legible then trying to write with something that is skidding about on glass

Thanks Maccruiskeen, I’ll give that a try.

afaik the best you can hope for on ipads that don't support apple pencil etc is to use a so-called ‘precision’ stylus.

It has a little transparent disc around the finer tip. The disc 1. tricks the ipad screen and 2. you can see through the disc and hopefully get a more accurate mark than those big pillowy rubber tips.

something like this

*edit Would such a ‘precision-stylus’ continue to work as intended with the addition of paper-like screen-film? I’ve no idea, sorry.

Thanks MR I’ve tried one of those, without success. I have tried to push for a new iPad, it’s seeming like the best option, unfortunately unlikely however.
